Coverstock Life
« on: January 13, 2013, 08:48:28 AM »
I have heard from a few different friends, the Ebonite group of companies have some issues with keeping their coverstocks from dying "early".  I was wondering if there was any merit to this, does anyone notice any specific ball from a company, or a whole company, having issues with coverstocks.

Personally, I feel my Storm Hy-Road did't give me as much "productive life" as others i have thrown, but know several people in other Storm and Rotogrip pieces that are above average.

With my limited ability to purchase equipment, I don't want to set my sights on something that will give me 50 games and then be "dead", but i want to leave my options open to as many ball producers as possible.

Ball death, as it is called, does exist. Thing is, much of when it happens depends on the user and their maintenance regimen.

If you use the ball often, clean it only sometimes, never refurbish the surface, etc, etc, etc...., you are going to suffer from a much shorter lifespan.

If you use the ball regularly, ALWAYS clean it immediately after use, have the surface freshened after 30-40 games, and rejuvenated after every 75-100 games, your ball is going to last much longer.

ALL BALLS SUFFER LOSSES IN PERFORMANCE LEVELS, no matter what you do, but you CAN extend those useable periods greatly by doing regular maintenance.

I know guys here who are still using 5,6,7 year old, and older, balls that work fine.

+1 Some balls require more maintenance than others. I would agree Ebonite coverstocks require a little more maintenance compared to others due to their heavy absorption rates. I found this to be the case with my Gamebreaker, I thought it became oil soaked and lost it's reaction quicker than my Roto Cell despite cleaning it after every session but after having a rejuvenation it's reacting like new again.
