Technique topic: The Ten Pin (or 7!)
« on: August 15, 2006, 03:23:37 AM »
For awhile, I seemed to be doing pretty well on 10 pin conversions, somewhere around 80%.  Lately, I seem to have more and more problems with them, and I am considering looking at different techniques to shoot at the ten pin.  I already use plastic, and I had been lining up with my left foot on about 38 and throwing the ball across the third arrow.  I think one of the problems I am having is turning my body correctly, and I tend to square towards the line as I approach it.  Do any of you use a straighter shot at the ten pin?  I still would like to angle at it, I don't want to try throwing the ball straight down 1 or 2, but I think I might have more success if I shrunk the angle a little bit.  Thoughts?  How do you throw at the ten?

I stand on 32 and turn my left shoulder (slightly) towards the 10 pin.  My target is the third arrow.  Also, I cock my wrist back so that my palm is facing the pins.  I have had good luck with this technique and have been hitting around 90% in practice.  Hope this helps.

Move as far left as you are comfortable with.  (For me, I'm at about 42, crossing 18).  Square up with the corner pin, not the lane or foul line.  You're trying to throw straight at the pin, not straight down lane.  Lead with the  ring finger; that is, keep the palm behind the ball and as you release exert pressure with the ring finger, not the middle finger as you would on your strike ball.  If done correctly the ball will almost back up into the 10 pin for a right hander.

As far as squaring up goes, I would say that if you have a loose armswing and you follow through the target to the 10 pin, your right shoulder should take care of itself (assuming you are right handed).

Roll it over the holes...can't hook then.

I'm fairly decent on my 7 pin.
Try not to rotate your wrist.
I stand anywhere between 20-40 and target from 10 to 20, depdending upon
the oil pattern, or lack of one.

10 pin I stand on 40, aim for the reflection of the 10 pin. Break my wrist and should go fairly straight. If it is dry I'll move my target to the right of the reflection. I could never do a target at the arrow. I can barley make them now.

More angle? Not if that doesn't come to him with his game. Spares are something you have to practice to good get at, but if you aren't lined up right in the first place.....now what is "right" is the hard part, you have to know YOUR swing and footwork or have a coach help out, but try this...

Read this article, you say you might like a straighter shot, so maybe this is the ticket.

Thanks, Hex, that's exactly the kind of thing I was looking for.  My problem has been hitting the angle right when trying an extreme angle at the ten.  I feel like I'm trying too hard to hit that mark or something, I'm not sure.  I was trying to think of a straighter approach, and what Borden describes might be just right.  I'll give it a try!

I'm with Ragnor, you want more margin for error throwing a plastic straight ball, then use as much of the lane as possible.  Line up with your target at the 20 board arrow.  Stand where ever you need to to pick it up.  38, 40 is totally reasonable.  But 20 board arrow is big as day and standing out there all by itself, should be easy to hit.

I usually stand out by the furthest left dot and throw it over the middle arrow.  As long as I follow through the middle arrow to the 10 pin the plastic ball will take it out.

I guess that means I use the 'more angle' approach.  It seems easier to do it that way for me.
