Since there is a thread about over hyped balls, i figured, why not an under-rated balls.
My purple and gold bash is so awesome. When i first got it, it was hooking more than my old domination. Now it is always in my bag, and carrying better than ever. I love it! Its just that ball that rolls off my hand perfectly every time.

i think most "low end" equpiment could fall into this category. it seems, that the latest, greatest most hooking equipment is hyped. however, for many bowlers, these entry level balls fit a variety of needs in an arsenal. i really like my power groove. i rarely get ot use it...but when i can...it's performance is tremendous.
-
I think the gamebreaker. It came out right about the time the cell came out and nobody around here gave a look at it. Its an unbelievable piece of equipment

I like Brian's comment about 'all low end equipment'. Companies always talk about how a certain piece is a good value. I think that people take this as a drop in performance level. I understand that companies need to advertise to people who don't bowl much but still. I try to keep this out of mind, but I still find myself not throwing my "value" ball as much because I know it costs less, which means it must not hit as hard. It's hard to get over, even when you know the truth. Imagine the people that don't know the truth!

anything by lane #1

but seriously, Roto Grip Pluto. Killer ball gets next to no attention...

Brunswick's entire BVP series qualifies. You could make yourself a nice arsenal from just those balls and compete anywhere.
Interesting that someone should jokingly mention Lane #1 because in a couple of occasions, it happens to be true: XXXL and Liberator, especially the XXXL. There are guys I've bowled with who badmouth Lane #1 mercilessly but when the black XXXL came out, I could walk up and down the house and see XXXLs peering out from bags all over the place.
Biggest single ball in this category in the last 5-10 years, though, may be the AMF Orbit Extreme. It has a real core and wears SuperFlex, and sold at most pro shops for $100 or less.
In general, though, the comment about entry-level equipment in general is accurate. Most all equipment is so good these days that there are very few bad balls, even at the lowest levels.

I agree with the statement about the "low end" equipment. Most people could use these pieces with HUGE success on the THS, but go for the higher end stuff anyways.

I agree on Raid and Gamebreaker just by site! Great stuff!

PS I am not sure all lowend equipment is the answer....I think when carrydown is present....big cores with lots of diff do the trick! LOVE my Awesome REVS....but it was NOT underrated!

For me it would be Roto Grip Venus and the Storm Sure Fire both these balls are perform well for me on a wide array of conditions. Have to agree with the comment about the lower line balls, seems I put up my best games with these gems.

I agree with the Awakening. It is a private ball so there isn't much marketing. I wonder if the next on will be the Rude Awakening.
-
I don't know about the gamebreaker as being underhyped.. I thought it was fairly popular ball. I liked mine quite a bit.. just a bit of oil soaker of course, but thats pretty true of all the higher end pieces I think.
-
How about an ebonite tornado. Probably one of my more popular balls yet. By far the most under-rated ball to me, you would be surprised how versatile that ball really is.

Attitude Shift...came out the same time as the cell and just got steamrolled by its popularity on TV. Have thrown that and the cell and the attitude reads the lane better, rolls harder, and has more backend pop. Cell is an amazing ball but the Attitude shift doesn't get nearly enough love. It's paid for itself so I have no complaints.

Tantrum-a highly underrated piece w/ a coverstock that takes well to changes and length & angularity similarly equal to higher end equipment. Very much slept on.
Raid- another great piece rolls long and moves off the breakpoint w/ avengence. She got out shined by the gamebreaker( don't get me wrong a very versatile ball) and then was discontinued (breaks my heart).
I see alot of solids listed but which pearls do you think was underreated?

Track Rising SE is a very under rated, and under hyped piece of equipment. I can see this being one of those, "man I wish I could find one of those" type of balls in 4-5 years.

Want to second the Columbia 300 Rival and any of the Vibes... great balls for the money.

The AMF lineup low end roto stuff.. ie pluto neptune, But yes AMF makes great stuff just most people never hear about it..lol
-
This was several years ago...but I am going with the Ebonite Cat Line. This was their mid line equipment. I think at the time the high end line was the APEX stuff.
Anyway the biggest ball in the CAT line was the Predator, but their were alot of other goods one in there: Predator/Tiger/Puma/Wildcat(I had this one). I actuallly think this line was better.
-
Aside from my bash, I go my Brunswick Racing Zone for free over the summer, there is so much room for error. Last week I bowled the easiest 7 something of my life without a mark. Of course it was a burnt up house shot, but there was still a good amount of carry down.
It is a sweet ball though.
-
I thought the original green and orange Messengers were under hyped. Alot of bowlers in my area loved these, including me. The Columbia Hyde was another one that didn't get the hype, yet was maybe the #1 ball that year in my town.
The Tour Power didn't get alot of the hype either, IMO. I loved that ball,

The Ebonite Wildcat was a real sleeper. It had the Wolf/Reactive 8 ball core and pretty good cover. You just don't find them for sale....at all. So apparently the secret is out on the Wildcat.
But lately, the Brunswick Avalanche series is I think, underrated. These are great balls at a great price point. Easy to sell and make happy customers.
I think when you start talking about Balls of the Year and sleepers of the Year and duds of the year you need to consider the demographics of your area. Our association is made up of over 40% senior bowlers. They don't have a lot of ball speed, and they don't want to spend a lot of money.
