Taping the thumb
« on: January 05, 2012, 03:00:41 PM »
Tonight, after many experiments, I decided to use tape primarily on my thumb instead of inside the thumbhole, due to a sweaty thumb and sticking. I used the Turbo purple on the front of my thumb and the beige on the back and the inside (where it sticks the most). Since I used the pre-cut tapes, it was kind of messy, but it worked except for the top peeling when I put the thumb in the hole. For those who tape there thumbs, what techniques do you use? I tried looking at the Vise poster, but it was too small to see the different ways of taping the thumb.

I use nt 50 vise. Clean thumb with alcohol and then wrap. It is wide enough to cover entire thumb and will not peel at the top if you clean your thumb thouroghly.

Those that can do. Those that can't complain. Pimpin ain't easy, but it's mandatory.

I have only used tape on the back of my thumb. I use the pre-cut Turbo Mint Green tape (for the slowest release) and start the piece of tape halfway up my thumbnail and stretch it down so that about a 1/4" is sticking out past the top of my thumbhole. I sweat alot so I use a small amount of super glue to glue the top and bottom. However, I only use the tape when I know I'm bowling a lot of games (15+).

Personally, I hate taping over the pads of my fingers/thumb. Something about the natural grip feels sooooo much better than any piece of tape.

Some people will use the non precut tape and simply tape over the front and back of the thumb in one piece (over the tip) to prevent peeling, etc.

I have a relaxed span and a somewhat tighter thumb to ensure I don't "grab it" or have to squeeze it.

That being said, I use Valentino Franken tape and only put it on the front and sides of the thumb, never in the back.  It seems to fine tune the thumb and I usually end up with 3-4 pieces on the sides and 3-4 in the front because it is so thin.

I could never understate the importance of having a fine tuned grip and a consistant and CORRECT fit.

Valentino Franken Tape is great tape. I used it all the time in the back of thumb hole before switching to Ron's Magic Carpet a bit over a year ago.

I used Brunswick 3/4" white tape in front of the hole and ditto on back of hole and taped it to be on the border line of being a bit tight and then added a piece of Franken tape over the white tape on back of hole and it worked great. You would think adding a piece of black tape in the example I have stated would make it too tight, but not so with the Franken tape as the Franken tape is so thin, yet so slick, that it helped the release even if it did tighten the hole a wee bit.

Question on the Frankentape. Since my thumb is sweaty, if I put the thumb tape over the front and back of my thumb and the sides of my thumb are still exposed, will the Frankentape be slick enough to prevent that part of my skin sticking in the hole?

I'm not too sure if not putting in on the sides (only front / back) would cause you to stick or not, i'd say that for ME I would probably hang up more that way.  Give it a shot both ways.  Just make sure to use alcohol or something to clean the "crap" out of the thumb after removing all tape and re-taping.

I like using it on front / sides, clean in the back.  I can advocate on that.

I personally don't see any benefit to adding tape in the BACK if the thumb is a correct fit in the first place, the frankentape I use in the front / sides is only to "fine tune".

Hope that helps or makes some sense.

At one time I was the poster child for flexie patch.  I would use super glue to glue the corners down to keep it from curling up when inserting into the hole.  I solved this issue by learning to drill a bowling ball correctly!  I have not bought flexie patch in years.  My thumb hole is tight and span relaxed and I do not squeeze the ball any more.

When I use to use the tape I use to use a little bit of new skin on the nail of my thumb right before using the tape to kind of glue it in place.  Not a permanent fix I'm sure, but it could help until you find the solution you need.

I'm pretty sure the Frankentape is used on the inside of the hole, not directly on the thumb.  --  JohnP

Yes it is. I guess that maybe I didn't make myself clear in my post above.
