thumb hole tightness
« on: March 25, 2010, 12:40:44 AM »
The past few weeks I have noticed some days that about 50% of my shots have much less revs and those shots with less revs were hard to aim as well.

First thing I think DURING the games/league is that im not:

staying down at the line
following thru properly
or getting my hand under or inside the ball

but now im thinking that im just not paying attention to the tightness of my thumbhole. I use my rosin bag on the thumbhole which helps get the ball very cleanly off my hand but now I''m thinking that it also helps wrench it off my thumb when it is too tight and thus it catches my thumb for a bit and there goes a clean accurate release!

does that make sense? anyone else have that happen to them?

(O and I forgot to mention that my thumb tends to swell up and down as I bowl which would explain why some shots are off my hand clean and others not)

Before each shot, I squeeze my thumb for a second or two to help reduce any swelling.  This helps me keep a more consistent release.  I also am quick to adjust tape if I start to hang, since it hurts my release and my accuracy.

Personally, I don't like to make too many changes during play, however, you do need to pay attention to thumb fit, especially if your thumb swells or shrinks over the course of the night.  I have learned this the hard way myself
You need to keep tape with you and maybe have the thumb sized neutral enough that at the start, you might need tape and towards the end of the night, you can pull it out as your thumb swells.  You don't want this issue to ruin a good game or set.

I always thought that if a bowler had the proper pitches and sizes... the thumb swelling should be minimal.  After a few attempts of messing with pitches and various drillings, I found that an oval slug with some reverse pitch did the trick.  So much in fact, that I haven't had to keep tape in my bag for about seven months now.

You're very correct on this line of thought. I carry tape and use it in and out of the ball during play but I cut the 1" white tape in thirds. One piece of this in or out thru the course of the night is all that is ever necessary for me.

Guys that have alot of thumb fit issues should look into possible changes in fit.

As a person was also went through major thumb issues, an oval insert does help, no one's thumb is oval. I also used Magic Carpet and it's fantastic (before the oval thumb).  I have tried pitching my thumb all the way back for a quick release years ago, worked well for a while but couldn't hold the ball to good after a while
