Unusual bowling oddity......
« on: November 16, 2008, 04:53:26 PM »
Shoot at a ten pin today, I hit the 10 pin very hard (ball speed was 32mph) the pin goes into the pit, comes out onto the deck, bounces over the rack sweep, and dives head first into the under ground ball return.

What unusual odities have you witnessed while bowling?

At Duisburg's Treff Bowling, a house close by from my home,  this happens quite freqeuntly... The ball return between the lanes has an open ramp next to the pin deck. If you splatter the pins "well", chances are high that one ends up on the ramp and slips into the tunnel.
Another funny effect: if you try a corner pin and toss the ball into the gutter just in front of the pin, this return ramp can act as a jump ramp back onto the pin deck! I had, after attempts to convert the 10 pin, have the ball fly across the empty deck to hit a virtual 7 or 8...

We had a pin get flipped out of the back and over the corner into the ball return. It was not noticed at first, until no more balls were returning and it was wedged into the feed on the return. They had to move us to another set of lanes to finish bowling.
Plus to moving: Fresh oil half way through second game
Minus to moving: Learning a new set of lanes

When I first got back into bowling in 2001, me and the wife was at the local center. She had thrown her ball and we weren't paying attention as to how long it had been down there. We called in a ball return and about 5 minutes later, the mechanic came walking up with her ball. A pin had jammed against it and the wheel in the back and her ball had so many divots in it, it looked like a golf ball.

last wendsday I saw a bowler hit a owling pin and sent in the ball return and did major damge to the pin and caused all the balls to jam up where they had to shut the ball return and work on it for 30 minutes.

Would a 10 pin leaning up against a down pin count?  The 6 pin tripped while the 10 was wobbling back.  Just as it tilted back the other way, the 6 pin rolled up right next to it and held it up.  If I had to guess, it was probably at a 30 degree angle.

I guess my oddest moment was a few years back on a Saturday night league.  I buried one high flush and sent all the pins straight back into the deck.  Well, one of the pins bounced up out of the back, onto the deck, landed on its base, spun around, and came to a rest STANDING UP in roughly the 10 pin spot.

I've seen a couple of weird things.  One happened to a buddy of mine on my high school bowling team.  He buried one high flush and watched the 10 pin jump probably 6" straight up and then straight back down and landed without even wobbling.  Made me laught quite a bit cause he couldn't shoot 10 pins for anything...and he missed it.

Then, another one happened to me last year during league.  The owner of the house had just put in new pins and everyone was complaining that their carry had gone down cause they weren't carrying the hits they had.  I wrapped the pocket on the shot....the 6 pin was going around the and head knocked the bottom of the 10 pin and it slid damn near into the 5 pin spot....just had to laugh and make the easy spare.

A buddy of mine a couple of weeks ago threw a 20-pin strike.  He blew the rack apart on his lane, sent one pin flying over the machinery on his lane into the next lane and got a strike there, too!!

Also, had a match a few months ago where 2 teammates each shot 300 in the same game and the team lost that game.  They were giving 347 pins [yes, 347 pins in a men's league!!!] and lost because 2 of the guys on the other team shot 180's on 100 averages.

I had a pin bounce into the ball return 5 weeks ago and by the time they figured out what happened and got it out my new Grand Illusion came back with a big gouge right in the track area.
