......and, as usual, people looked at me like I have/had 10 heads.
The shot put out (I believe) was the Gladiator pattern. I don't know if this is the correct name of the pattern, but I believe that is what I was told. The shot was like ice outside of 7. From 8-12 there was some hold, but only for about 12-14 frames. But even though there was hold, the backs were squirrely, so speed control was at a premium. The insides were fried, but due to the pattern outside of 12 board, we were all forced inside whether we liked it or not.
After I saw a 215 average guy shoot a 95, (yes, a 95!!) I was able to witness one of the greatest tantrums ever, complete with bag smashing and the obligatory "this-shot-and-house-sucks-anyway" throw away excuse line.
When I was confronted by the county officials about the playability of the shot, I told them that I thought it was perfect. I said that the best team(s) SHOULD win and that the best teams are the ones who are accurate, knowledgeable of their equipment, and make the best moves in the right amount of time. I told them that to put a county tournament on a cake shot is and should be seen as insulting to the quality of bowlers you have show up to your event. Of course, I said this loud enough for several bowlers to hear and was met with bewildered glances.
By the way, coming in at 220, I shot 1684 for all events. And damn proud of it. For a guy who fluffs it down 12-11 board about 14mph, I was shocked to see that I can still play the deep inside down and in shot I used to love. That pattern made me stand about 26 and pipe it 17-19 mph over 18 board to 14 at break point and walking it in to the pocket. Corners were the problem. Well, so were the stone 8's and 4-9's sprinkled in
