I wouldn't say he was sandbagging...he just had no expectations of bowling that well. So for now you're a 200 average bowler, but you are a true 200+ average bowler if you can maintain that for the entire season and remain consistent. I won't lie, I have done some sandbagging in my day as well. In my home bowling center, you're basically screwed if you have no handicap. At the beginning of the season, I was averaging right around 230 and it felt good, but in the Trios league that I was in, we would lose game after game because of not having any handicap. I let my average drop down a bit and lo and behold we were winning games. If I had maintained an average around 230, I would have needed to shoot close to 750 or so every night in order for our team to win anything at all the way things were. I don't believe in sandbagging at all, but it wasn't a very competitive league and it didn't cost the team anything. If it's for something competitive, go in every week with your head held high and bowl the best you possibly can.
