Man i have some bad luck.I bought a kaufman scale on ebay and today it shows up.So i go to open box and i notice one end of box is smashed and it looks like there was a hole and it was taped back shut.When i look in box i notice all the weights are gone and one slide weight is missing....according to seller box was good and scale was complete with weights in box.......man that sucks!!!!!

Take several pictures of the box and the damage. Print out a copy of your E-bay sale. Find a place, such as Jayhawk, who sells replacement parts and get a list with prices of all the replacement weights, etc. Then file a claim with UPS, the sooner the better.

Each of the 2 slide weights is called a poise. Each poise is not removable unless you unbolt one of the rulers. So, it may be that the scale was not complete at shipping.

I feel for you, just sold all my pro shop items and the like new jayhawk jig got tossed and one of the poles broke. I ordered a brand new one for the guy I sold it to, and I insured the jig for $700. Well now they want more than a letter from Jayhawk, and I have the origional receipt and the new receipt. They still want more item value proof. They are really a joke! I spent $75 to ship it and added extra insurance....and still these problems. Didn't mean to steal the thread, just wanted to say they are hard to work with when trying to get the insurance money.

i emailed jayhawk to get a quote for all the missing pieces.The screw is missing on the side that the slide weight is missing so i assume thats how it came off,the parts were in the pic i had of it.Item was not packed all that great but seller told me there were no holes in box and you can clearly see someone taped up one end of the box to cover a large hole,i just filed a damage claim with ups

I have had some bad luck with UPS and refuse to use them anymore whenever possible. Mainly because my package would always take 5 plus days to get delivered for B.S. reasons. Mainly sitting in warehouses forever.
I use FedEx ground and it gets from central AR, to either cost in three business days or less. Always a big plus.
I will say that around Christmas UPS was as fast as FedEx. That stopped in January.

So UPS sucks because one person was having a bad day??? I''m sorry (actually I''m not) but I''ve shipped hundreds of packages (if not over a grand) via UPS and not a single one arrived to its destination with an issue. Fed-Ex and USPS on the other hand, well, that''s a whole different story...

Good luck. I can almost guarantee it wasn''t packaged properly. They really need to be double or triple boxed, and they really need to be encased in styrofoam.
All shipping companies just pick up the boxes and throw them. Very few cardboard boxes will handle that because of the weight. Try putting a bowling ball in a xerox paper box and toss it around - box will be too stressed to hold up.
Better go ahead and file a paypal and ebay complaint as well. The seller didn''t package it properly and it responsible for you getting an item that was not as described.

Man, that sucks. I remember when I got mine I was really surprised at how the guy packaged it. When I picked it up it felt like it was going to fall through the bottom of the box. He did use a bunch of packing peanuts, but there was still plenty of room for the thing to shift - guess I was lucky that it was only coming about 75 miles. Plus, iirc, the guy basically taped the entire outside of the box.
After reading this I had to go out and weigh the thing. It only weighs 34 lbs (33 1/2), but most of that is on one side. The actual weights only weigh a little over 7 lbs, but thats enough that you don't want them rolling around the box. They're small and heavy enough to easily put a hole through the box.
I think if I were to ship one I would find a way to mount it on a thin sheet of plywood - probably drill some holes and nylon tie it down, then wrap the s--t out of it with bubble wrap! Makes you wonder how Kaufman ships them out doesn't it?
Mine looks just like yours, except the hook is attached to the heaviest weight (8 lb). Never thought about it, but I guess I won't be able to weigh a 6 lb ball!
Good luck with your claim. $550 is a nice chunk of change.

Your the only one saying UPS sucks, which I guess could be your opinion. Others just give examples of problems they have had with UPS and other companies. I used to love UPS until the started getting delays on every package that was sent to me and packages I sent to others. So I got a FedEx account because shipping cost was cheaper and I was able to send and received items quicker.

before you start insulting someone by calling them names you should at least know what your talking about..i never said it wasnt insured,i was talking about how package arived,thats why i filed insurance claim on it...

ups isn't all that great..
I had a gateway desktop computer shipped and the day it arrived the driver first pulled all boxes out and piled on front step then knocked to see if someone was home, which we were not (i was at work and the ex-wife was who cares where). the worst problem was it was pouring down raining.
the next day when i went to pick them up at the office every box was so wet that if it wasnt for the packing foam the boxes would have fell apart.
luckly the computer/parts were dry due to the packing & bagging by gateway.
so trust ups as much as your daily mail delivery

I have worked at UPS for 12 years now in almost every area. I was a driver for a time but I am currently working in their air cargo/heavy freight division. Maybe I can provide some insight into these issues.
Let me start by saying that every company has employees that care and those that do not. The most frustrating part of my job is that I take pride in my work and it pisses me off that not everyone else takes their job as seriously as I do. However, I can honestly say that MOST damages result from shippers simply not packaging the contents properly. One of my jobs was unloading trailers that Ground shipments would come in on. They get processed and loaded onto the package cars for delivery. Every morning I would spend the majority of my time taping up boxes that should have been in the dumpster. People are too cheap to buy a new box instead they would reuse one that was paper thin and holding 40lbs worth of metal with 1 piece of tape.
These packages would then go to a clerk station to get inspected and re-boxed if necessary. I can assure you that UPS spends a lot of money properly boxing up stuff that shippers were too lazy to do right in the first place. You may even have received a package that looked brand new and thought the shipper was wonderful, when in fact he/she did a lousy job and just figured we would fix it if need be.
I'm not saying that we don't damage packages. We do. When you process so many pieces it is going to happen. At least in our building, we try to do the right thing and repackage damaged goods even if we weren't at fault. A Kaufman scale is awkward to ship and thus needs special attention to packaging. I don't know if the customer didn't package it properly or if it was damaged in transit.
FWIW, we do not tolerate anyone damaging/throwing/kicking/opening packages. If you are caught, you will be terminated. The wonderful Teamsters will try to recover the persons' job, but that's neither here nor there. I am speaking only for my building...the others may be lousy in these regards.

My only complaint from UPS was package delays. ie delivery dates were always being changed.(after being shipped) It seemed the packaged spent a lot of time sitting waiting on the next shift to unload the truck and send it on its way. This is on UPS ground, I never use the other services. With FedEx ground or home delivery the package seems to move much quicker. I will say that around Christmas UPS ground was awesome fast.
The other thought is if you package the item well it will be much less likely to get damaged even if something happens to it.
Just assume this is your delivery guy and pack accordingly. (best intro ever)

I rarely have trouble with UPS Ground being delayed, but if it does get delayed for any reason other than an "act of God" weather type of scenario, you could be eligible for a reimbursement on your shipping cost. If they merely leave it sitting in the wrong place for an extra day, put it on the wrong truck, forget to deliver it, etc., UPS is usually willing to reimburse you for the cost of shipping.

kidlost2000, any chance you are in a rural area? I've shipped packages where the UPS site will tell me it's going to cost $x and take y days, but it actually ends up being more expensive and taking longer. When I checked the invoice and tracking info it turns out that the place was considered a rural zone. When I questioned about it I was told that sometimes those packages all get held until a certain day of the week, or until they have enough packages to justify sending a driver "out of his way" to deliver them. At least UPS was nice enough to waive the fee since the website had the entire address and didn't flag it as an extra fee.

Not a rural place. I'm located in Little Rock, AR. Most examples are if someone ships me a package with UPS ground and I start tracking it online it will usually always take the full 5 business days except for Florida. I always get packages from there in 3-4. With FedEx I can ship from me to anywhere in the continental U.S. and they have it in 3 business days. Sometimes 4.(when using FedEx home/ground) When you track both companies online, one is moving a lot more then the other.
I will watch my package arrive with UPS at 2pm and not move again until 1 or 2 am when it is loaded on to another truck. Sometimes it will get to said location before noon and still sit and not be moved and on the road again until after midnight.
Which is why it usually takes longer. When you sit that long two or three times that adds an extra day or more to delivery. It is usually part of the reason for the rescheduled delivery date if I were guessing. Because I go on the date given after UPS actually has the item scanned and in their possession.

The next time a UPS package gets delayed on its way to you, have the shipper call UPS and give them the tracking number and tell them it was delivered after its scheduled delivery date and you want to know if they can file a claim on it. If UPS finds it was delayed for any reason that isn't beyond their control, they should cut a check and send it to the shipper, and he can reimburse you once he gets that money.

Not sure how it works now, but UPS used to only sort at certain times. It wasn't a constant sorting and moving process.
I had a co-worker that worked there part-time during the holiday season, and our regular UPS driver confirmed it. Basically, shipments would come in to the airport, be picked up and delivered to the warehouse/shipping center. They would be sorted based on routes, then loaded onto the trucks early in the morning (by 5 or 6 am).
When the drivers return at the end of the day, all work is done to make sure those packages get sorted and routed so they can make to the airport - I believe 11pm was our deadline.
Then the night crew would sort all incoming packages along with anything from the previous day - so seeing it get checked in a 2pm and not move until the next day isn't unusual......at least it wasn't several years ago. I don't knwo how they do things now, but doesn't sound like it has changed much.

I'll take UPS over USPS any day! I bought two items that was shipped by USPS and never received them. Thankfully paypal refunded my money when I filed a claim. The other items that was shipped USPS that I did receive, took a week to 10 days to get and one item was over two weeks. Not a big fan of USPS and I ship everything UPS, but I don't have a problem with Fedex! Just my $.02, Bruce
