rubbing alcohol

Is rubbing alcohol to harsh as a bowling ball cleaner?????

true story:  put a danger zone in five gallon bucket with rubbing alcohol covering the top of the ball.  Let it sit for like 20 hrs out in the garage  in the winter.  When I took out the ball it was gray.  DEATH GRAY.  I brought the ball in the house and let it warm up.  IT slowly went from gray to brown in color.  I had fun league that night and once some lane oil got on the ball and a towel to whipe or in this case "spread" the oil around the ball, the danger zone went back to black.  She over hooked the first couple of throws.

Rubbing alcohol works to get dirt and grime off the surface,  but if you want to extract oil you need to have a pro shop run it through a rejuvenator or do a hot water bath at home.  Search around and you'll find plenty on that.

If you leave a ball submerged in any liquid that long you might get phasing -  a discoloration that slowly disappears.  My guess is that's what happened to your Zone.  Should cause no permanent damage.

That is funny LOL. I always use rubbing alchohol to clean my gear and never use the manufacture's crap. Never thought of submerging it though

Never heard of something like that. I heard that rubbing alcohol actually hurts the balls coverstock after a while. True or not?

Its what manufactures tell you so you spend 10x's the price on their windex in a name brand bottle.

Personally I use acetone. Just dont use it on urethane

According to the USBC, acetone is not supposed to be used on any ball as it softens the surface.  And BTW, all modern bowling balls except plastic / polyester balls are made of urethane...

Most alcohol (70%) will get some of the dirt and oil off, but it''s not quite strong enough for tough jobs. It can dry out the finger inserts and make them hard/brittle. This is the first I''ve ever heard of alcohol submersion. If a little is okay, then a lot is good?

Acetone is definitely too harsh for every day use. Long term it will make the coverstock much more susceptible to cracking. It''s good for cleaning up the super glue that may get on the ball, though. Acetone is also a known carcinogen (causes cancer) so it''s use should be sparingly, and probably with disposable rubber gloves to be safer yet. You decide, it''s your health.

On edit, thanks Paul.

Right, you just happened to have enough rubbing alcohol to fully submerge a bowling ball in a 5 gallon bucket?

More money than brains?

Another 36xxx troll?

Should be plenty full by now.

Yeah I was wondering that too, that's a lot of rubbing alcohol to submerge a whole ball in it.  Pretty amazing/strange experiment, but sounds like it'd cost more than you'd get out of it and couldn't afford to do that regularly.  With that kind of money, try submerging it in Simple Green for a day and see what that does.  Might at least get more oil out of it, possibly even heat up the simple green to 110-120* or so if your brave and hot water bath it in simple green (Warning, this might be dangerous, not sure if Simple Green is safe to heat like that).  Sounds crazy, but probably better than doing this with rubbing alcohol at least, yet both seem quite a bit much in cost for a one time bowling ball oil extraction (heck just bring it to a pro-shop rejuvenator cause I suspect the price would be the same as for that much rubbing alcohol or simple green).

PLEASE, don't give him any more ideas. He may think you're serious.

Yes, I did do this.  My wife had these large bottles for some time(clean freak)
I put the fluid back in the bottles when I was done. There was a black tint in color instead of clear.  I use the stuff as a degreaser in the garage.   This happened some time ago.   I put the ball in a bucket first and then coverd it with alcohol.   If any body would like to see how much fluid was used in total, put a bowling ball in a 5 gallon, cover with water, remove ball, and measure.
I just went the garage and put a ball in a 5 gallon bucket dry.   There is not a lot of space left around the ball.  Pretty much all ball in the bottom of bucket.
I was young then and bowling once every two weeks in a fun league(lots of drinking).  My danger zone was free and used.  I could not throw a hook and I wanted maxiumn traction. I bowled for like 4 seasons.  The league started breeding the 3rd year and then divorces took the other half and it all fell apart.  I bought a Tzone later on but it would not go straight.  Years later, well this week  I garbage picked a Danger Zone.  I will be the third thumb hole in her.   Good times to come.
