VENT HOLES

How many bowlers on here use a vent hole for their thumb?

My son was sticking in his thumb hole and it was suggested he have a vent hole drilled. In doing so, he was able to come out of his thumb cleaner and has a better release.

Just wondering who else on here uses them...

I use a vent here. Without one I tend to not come out clean and then wittle away at the hole until it gets sloppy then I fall out too early, the vent hole has solved the problem.

Just recently had vent holes added to my thumbholes.  Vast difference in feel for me.  I never had much of a problem with my thumb hanging up in the ball, but having the vent hole there has really helped my thumb clear the hole cleanly now.

Think of it as a air valve with no actual valve to stop the air from either direction. It stops the thump pop sound at release (if you have any sound at all) and will usually cause you to get out of the ball much cleaner.

I draw a line 45 degrees from the thumb, and mark a spot 1 1/4". Using a 1/8" bit, I drill the hole with 1/2" forward pitch.

Small adjustments will need to be made based on your lateral pitches if they are crazy but +/- 1/8th lateral will be fine with this method.

Hope that quick n dirty picture helps. This is based on a right hander, flip flop everything for a lefty.

Remember, pitches in the thumb will alter how this works and what needs to be adjusted when drilling the vent!

If you move back 5/8" behind the thumb hole on the center line and use the same pitches as are in the thumb hole, the vent hole will come out 2 1/2" down in the back of the thumb hole.

Some slugs have vent holes predrilled through the vent slot, or you can drill your own with a 1/8" bit.  Just make sure you don't plug the vent slot with glue.  --  JohnP

This is what i don't understand.  What does this magic hole really do that makes it so worth wild. If its too make the pop sound go away well then maybe you should look at making the hole a little larger or stop squeezing.  You make it sound like an air valve, but this hole doesn't force air into your thumb or anything.  So really what does this vent hole do except give pro shops more of a reason to charge us more money?

I am fit correctly... but there are how many ideas of what a "correct" fit really is?

A snug thumbhole is, IMHO, necessary for the free armswing that is emphasized in this sport these days.  

The only way many are going to get their thumb out of a snug thumbhole cleanly is for there to be a vent hole for that thumbhole.

For those of you out there that feel that a proshops only reason to put a vent hole in a ball is so they can make more money off of you that's a shame.  The shop I go to would consider this a free adjustment along the lines of opening up a thumbhole.  

I'd rather have a vent hole than a sloppy thumb hole that will only be snug a few times during the entire season, if at all.
