urethane balls?
« on: April 19, 2010, 03:10:30 PM »
Hi guys, just wondering if you guys would recommend one to get a urethane ball? what are its advantages as compared to weaker pearlized balls? Also, which one would be better, the storm natural, seismic desperado or the amf hype urethane? thanks in advance!

Desperado is a great ball. I own and have used extensively on PBA Cheetah pattern, the Willow Creek Classic pattern, also here and their on the THS.

Great advantage to urethane is the smooth move no jumps or surprises. Kept dull urethane will read earlier than Reactives so be ready for that. I have noticed that with my Desperado on the patterns mentioned above I get a little more miss room right and left than people with Reactives. Also the Desperado has good high end core in it which will give better carry.

ok, thanks guys for the input. Aside from the desperado, would the hype urethane be a good choice? Coz, the desperado is not available in our area here. thanks!

From what I've heard the Urethane Hype handles alittle bit more oil than the Desperado. Plus, the price seems to be pretty good, my proshop sells em for $115.

If you want a Desperado, get a in contact with LTent on BBE, he was them for $125 shipped, that is the best price I've seen out there on them.

I love Urethane balls right now.  They really help fill out an arsenal very well.  They are also very different from "weaker" pearlized balls. The thing to remember is that even the "weak" pearls are reactive, meaning if it's dry enough, they can still hook a ton.  Urethane doesn't react as quickly to dry and is very smooth.  For example, there are times when even Tornados and Tropicals hook so much on a dry condition, people can not keep them in the pocket. On those nights, I've seen and personally thrown Urethane with no trouble staying in the pocket whatsoever.  In fact, those are the easy 700 series nights.  When you have the right condition for urethane, it is simply fantastic.
Here are a couple of articles I wrote about Urethane which you might find interesting.

I personally have a Storm Natural and I love it.  I haven't seen any Desperados or Hype Urethanes around here so it's hard to say how different they would be, but I don't think you can go wrong with any of them.
Bowling This Month gets some slightly different numbers for each.  They have the Hype Urethane as the one with the most hook, with the Desperado the least.  It also has the Hype Urethane with the least length with the Desperado and Natural the same.  In the end, it might be negligible.

Hype Urethane has a more dynamic core than the Natural, and the box finish is more agressive. It can be smoothed, but is nearly impossible to polish. Natural will polish if needed.

I have the Natural in my bag. I was very happy when I heard there was modern urethane balls being released to the market. I had been wanting a urethane with a mid performance core inside it since 2003. When I found out about the natural I went out an bought one, bought a nice condition Natural from a member on this site. It''s been the only ball I''ve used for leauge the last 2 months, up until this past sunday where the lanes were rather tough too much oil for the natural.

I find urethane is very smooth. It can overreact on you like anything else if you get the ball into the dry too soon. You do have to be more accurate when using this ball and that is why I love mine so much! You have some miss area but not a lot, maybe 3 boards right at most before the dry part of the lane causes the ball to react too soon. You might have 2 boards of miss to the left of your mark. So 5 boards of miss at the arrows on a THS with urethane versus maybe 8-10 boards at the arrows with pearl or solid. What I also noticed is if you miss your break point target down lane you will most likely not carry on a shot that might carry with a reactive ball. To me urethane is a great ball for many things. It''s not a ball to over/under on you unexpectedly, it makes you roll quality shots, and it makes you repeat your shots.

I use it as a learning tool but at the same time this ball has given me some great scores. Some not so great but that was all user error.

Honestly the ball for you depends on your lane conditions, age, and surface. If you have higher oil volume with a really smooth synthetic surface, the Hype might be what you need. If you have a medium oil shot with wood lanes, you might want to look for a desperado or an older urethane with a pancake block. Anything inbetween would be for the natural.

Natural takes very well to polish and works great on short oil and dry lanes.  But carry doesn't compare to my Blue Hammer!
