Urethane hooks early on dry heads?
« on: July 03, 2004, 08:01:03 AM »
Does anybody else agree with this?

A proshop firend that I know, told me that when on Drier Heads, that youhave to use Plastic because Urethane hooks early on the drier heads.

You agree?

I've always heard that on dry lanes, use Urethane.

Urethane is usually tame(controllable) on dry boards. I would have to disagree with what he said.

A while back, there was an article in BTM about the various coverstock technologies, in which it was written that urethane skids more in oil but hooks more in dry than plastic.  If you believe this to be true, then urethane will hook earlier than plastic in dry heads.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, friction is friction.  I must agree with your friend.

I seem to recall you posting a while back about your pure hammer rolling early? The Hammer was considered an early rolling Urethane compared to its 3 piece competition of the day.  As I'm sure you know resin was added to Urethane to promote skid in oil(store energy)and generate massive pop on the back end.  A Urethane may have a different shape but can have plenty of hook, my XXL being the extreme example of that.

A pearl Urethane (other than the XXL) might be a better option than plastic if you can get it through the heads.  Pearl Urethanes came out in the mid to late 80's to fight my nemesis short oil when the solids hooked too soon.  If you are bowling on extremely dry heads especially on a bad surface, plastic may be your only option provided you have polished the snot out of your Pure Hammer or other Urethane.

I hope that helps.

Dusty, while that is true, Ric is saying his friend said that urethane hooks early in general, which I can't believe to be true enough that you can't use it for dry....

So you guys are saying you can't use urethane on dry?  Ric never said fried or anything, just dry....Perhaps plastic is more advantageous, but you don't have to use it like his friend is saying........

hmm.. Now that I'm awake because of caffeine intake, yea, urethane will hook earlier on dry heads, but it really wouldnt be a uncontrollable move on the heads.

I suppose I shouldn't take things literally, should I?...

Well - a Black, Blue, Red, Purple solid hammer urethane ball, or any solid, or dull, or sanded urethane ball will hook early on dry heads, but that's why they created pearl urethanes (and LOFT is even better).
I have a Columbia Gold Dot pearl urethane with the standard 3-piece core that is just a straight as any standard plastic spare ball. At Reno it measured 81 hardness. Probably more durable than plastic. It hits pretty darn hard too! It hits so good that I no longer carry my trusty black hammer around.  It's great for playing up the boards on a house shot on those days you want to practice that shot. It's predictable on just about any condition - no surprises. Pearl urethane 3-piece balls are great dual purpose balls.
