Title: US Open Arsenal
Post by: Good Times Good Times on July 16, 2012, 08:23:34 AM
Hypothetical:

You are bowling the US Open this week.  Yep, 1:1 and completely FLAT, 42 feet in length.  Lane surface is Synthetic and has medium wear in the track.  That is all you know.

You get 3 pieces, PLUS a plastic.  (If you throw your strike ball at spares you get only three pieces).

Pick your arsenal and ball surface.

Marvel Solid - 4.5" p3 hole pin down
  2000 abralon
- would be used on the fresh, gets into a roll very quickly and would allow me to play inside until some friction developed

Infinite Theory - 5.5" x 3.5" pin down p3 hole
  4000 abralon
- when the Marvel ran out of gas I would switch to this and move a little further in

Victory Road Pearl - 5" pin up no hole
  box finish
- For the rest of the time when the lanes start to get silly and the shot moves to the left gutter

Due to my rev rate, my arsenal is going to be different from Russell's.  Mine would go like this:

Start with a mild solid like a Freeze Solid (if I went newer) or my Ebonite Black Ice with a 2 inch pin to PAP for control at either 2000 or 4000 abralon until some friction outside comes about.  Once that starts rolling too soon and I have to  migrate inside:

Go to a solid reactive with a stronger core with a 5 inch pin to PAP and 2000 abralon plus polish.  Something with more on the backend than the 2 in pin ball but yet still controllable on the backend; not skid flippy.  Once that starts to roll up to quickly:

Ball down to an entry level reactive like a Tornado or Slingshot at box finish also with a 5 inch pin to PAP to help the ball through the front part of the lane and increase my axis rotation to help create some angle on the backend.

Rather than worry about specific balls and/or drilling patterns make sure you have equipment with three(3) different surfaces: dull, smooth sanded, and polished.

Me and my Scroggins-esque style and rev rate would be using:

-Nano at 500 Abralon to open things up
-Modern Marvel at 2000 Abralon once the lanes opened up.
-Fire Road at 1500 polished once the MM was too much.

All 3 drilled 55x3.25x40 with a p1 weight hole.

Like Draper said, something dull, smooth sanded, and polished...
