Thumb Pitch Survey?
« on: July 06, 2005, 03:08:10 PM »
I recently switched my thumb pitch to forward.  One of the local balldrillers (not mine) who overheard me talking to a teammate said that forward pitch is the reason for spinning the ball and that only one professional bowler used forward pitch.  He said that in his 20 years of drilling he had never drilled forward for anyone.

I had been using zero for the last year and just had one ball drilled 1/2 positive.  No problems for me in getting out of the ball.

So that got me curious.  What do most of you use - forward, zero, or reverse thumb pitch (as read on a pitch gauge)?

Edited Subject.

Edited to add pitch gauge and zero.

But I am more forward than a guy who has a 4  inch span who uses 1/16 forward. In relation to the 63 degree angle.

My thumb has more holding power from the grip!  I am actually more forward of the 63 degree table!  He is actually back of or reverse of the table indicating a stiff or long thumb.

PS again....the 63 degree table
4 inch span = 1/8 forward
4 1/8 span = 1/16 forward
4 1/4 span = 0 F/R
4 3/8 span = 1/16 reverse
4 1/2 span = 1/8 reverse
4 3/4 span = 1/4 reverse
5 inch span = 3/8 reverse
1/8 increase in span = 1/16 increase in reverse
PPS most pro bowlers and top amateurs are slightly forward of these tables
PPPS Mike Durbin in his heyday on a 4 9/16 span I think Bill taylor told me was almost 9/16 forward.  Be careful of nerve damage under front of thumb.

I started at 1/2 away (reverse) some time back. Working towards positive; just recently drilled my first ball up with zero.

Rags, how much did you have to reduce your span to accomadate this 1/2" pitch change?

Sorry to take so long getting back to this.  I didn't reduce my span at all.  It started with a very relaxed grip, but will have to start reducing it if I go to any forward pitch (and I will).  I'm wondering myself how much to reduce it - I'm guessing that for every 1/8th forward I'll need at least a 1/16th reduction, probably more.
