I am bowling two leagues that are trios. One is a competitive scratch league and the other a Sport league.

I had always been told the highest average bowlers on a 5 person team should be lead and anchor, with the weakest (lowest average) bowling 3rd. What is the strategy in setting the line up for trios? Neither league has match points.

Without match points involved, it has always worked best for teams I have been on to allow the individuals bowl in the slot they feel most comfortable. On one team I am 2nd high average, but seem to have the "knack" to always at least double in the tenth. I enjoy being the set-up man, and hence usually bowl just before the "anchor".

Wherever a person has felt most comfortable is where I put them when it comes to trios. Even if it's a scratch league. I think there is no weaker position when it comes to three people. I've bowled each position and enjoyed bowling in all of them.

I use to get into a lot of heated discussions with my college coach about the positioning on a 5 man team. He used to put the weakest person in the 3rd position (which many times meant me), even though I was the 2nd highest average on the team...
