USBC: Have there been any improvements in 8 years?
« on: June 29, 2013, 05:21:09 PM »
The United States Bowling Congress (USBC) was formed in 2005 by a merger of the American Bowling Congress, Women's International Bowling Congress, Young American Bowling Alliance, and USA Bowling.

AFTER EIGHT YEARS, has the national governing body made any positive strides in any of the following categories?

Have there been any improvements in ...

* providing recognition for award achievements?
* league services?
* enforcement of rules and regulations?
* spending of membership dues?
* creating a better image for the game?
* promoting the game in a worthwhile manner?
* realistic cost-cutting measures?
* things that an average bowler/member would recognize?
* the USBC "System of Justice"?
* dealing with major problems?
* organizational pride?

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

But again, like I said, then the women would all cry foul and not come.  Only women who just want to go bowl and the top 1-2% of them come to bowl the mens Open.  They don't want equality, they want preference.  They cry about being able to do everything the men do, but they want a bunch of special rules, provisions or allowances.  That is not equality, that is not fairness.
... but who ever said that the USBC is fair?

Why a background screening?  It's not like a coach is entering your home.

Edited to add:

I understand why for a youth coach.

Really? So your requirement is that anyone should be allowed to coach. How about someone with some kind of criminal background, drugs, theft, rape? Think about it.

Maybe you don't want them to coach your kids(specifically not being alone with kids), but a criminal background shouldn't exclude someone from being a bowling coach for adults. Either they can be effective as a coach or they can't.

At some point, we have to let people who have past mistakes back into society. Unless of course, we want to force them to become career criminals.

It's hard to judge, but a lot of former criminals find something to get into that they're passionate about and that keeps them busy and out of trouble, maybe bowling is that thing for some people.  Obviously you'd have to be careful, but I don't feel that having a coach with a criminal past would worry me much, unless they want to show you something out in the back alley . .

So you are stating, if you were the owner of a bowling center, you would take a chance on someone with some sort of criminal past (drugs, theft, rape) and just let them coach in your center. I understand everyone needs a second chance, but this is your business and livelihood.

Also it should be interesting when you explain to your customers that the bowling coach in your center is only for adults and not kids.

For me it would take a lot of execellent character references and then a really excellent interview before I would even consider giving them a chance. I would probably still say no.

So what YOU are saying is once they make a mistake in life, we should just either lock them up forever, or just a quick double tap to the back of the head?

And yes, if I owned a bowling center, I would give the person a chance unless they didn't have the social skills to handle it.

It really would not be a great concern to me.  I'm only seeing a coach on the lanes.  I also do not know the background checks on everyone I deal with on a daily or chance basis.  There are public safety concerns for some jobs so they need to do background checks there and for anything related to youth like a youth coach. I don't think it is necessary for every job.

Back to the original topic, I sure haven't seen any improvement in anything since USBC was formed. Then again it won't be long until USBC doesn't have enough members to be a significant factor.

I agree.  Like I said before, it's getting really hard to explain to people just exactly what their membership payment earns them.  And how many people buy a membership simply for the Open Championships?  If the economy gets any worse and people can't afford to go anymore, there's losses right there.  How many people buy one just to get awards every year?  Well after this year the awards are all up to the local associations (aside from the big awards), and how many either won't want to incur the costs or be able to afford them?

What awards are being pushed onto the local groups? I haven't been in a league since the old ABC back in the early 2000's due to work forcing me out of league bowling due to my schedule.

All the things you used to get patches and pins for.  USBC will still do the honor score awards, but everything else below that is on the associations to order AND pay for.

Barring something unforeseen, USBC will likely cease to be a viable entity within three or four years.
