USBC League Issues

I bowl in a Wednesday night 5 person handicap league. We have been 11 weeks into the season so far and we have not recieved a league prize fund, nor have we been supplied a rules list. It was brought up tonight regarding what the prize fund was and the rules are to the Secretaty  of the league. We were told that the prize fund was the same from last year and so where the rules.

Now last I checked, the league needs to vote on one prize fund out of a couple suggested lists, and copies of the rules should have been put out during the captains meeting. in which the league secretary, treasurer, president and vice president be voted on. Now to top it all off, a team has dropped out of hte league and now areback to an even amount of teams now, but each week we have 2 "blanks" each week.

Sounds like you need to have a meeting with captains and officers on a non-league night to hash things out.

Your league seems very familar to leagues in my area. No voting, rules are hidden, and your league secretary (who probably is also the treasurer) does everything (You have a President and Vice President but I will guess they do not know the rules. Also they probably don't know they have to audit the money each week in the league's bank account)

Most of the teams in your league probably could care less. Right now you and the few that are complaining are going to be considered the problem. Even though you are following USBC rules, what most leagues think is their rules override the USBC.

In our leagues, the one thing I don't understand is this. Those who don't get involved, don't want things to change, are usually the ones that complain about the officers or how the league is running. Well when its time to make changes these same people are all about "let's just keep it the way it is". Then they complain about the same things next season.

A league in the center that I bowl in had this type of "leadership" and came up over $2000 short in the prize fund last year. I would say that it's time to get your local USBC involved, and be willing to go to national USBC if you don't get help at the local level.

This is always a confusing one. I am a secretary and have to be honest we have not finalized a prize fund either. Shame on the president and I for this one. Most of our money is nailed down in the rules which were voted on first night by the entire league, when all rules were read. In our case most of the money goes at $15 per point. The rest is split 75% prize fund and 25% last night team sweeper. Luckily this year we reached full strength on the 4th week. Up to that point it would have not been possilble to calculate a prize fund. Now I bring that up as to a comment that your league lost a team and that may have affected the finalization of a prize fund. It is the league presidents responsiblity however to appoint a prize committee in the first month and think that is sooner now too. The committee appointments are not the job of the secretary although he or she should be on the prize committee since they have to distribute the money.. There are very clear rules now on prize committee and audit committee, plus all bank statements now have to go to the league president, by rule. This has created some real problems with all leagues because they have to now be set up with federal EIN numbers and do business under the bowling centers name. Big mess...

All that said. It does sound like rules are not being followed, but you should address the president first on these. The printed rules are not set until the vote and even I am slow many times distributing and then we throw most of the copies in the trash the night I give them out. People never listen at the meetings and then complain about the rules afterwards. Not saying you are one of those, just a general observation. Ask who is on the prize and audit committees, these are not an option. Then if they are set up talk to whowever heads that committee as well. IF no justice, ask the president for a meeting. IF they refuse go up the ladder to the local and higher if needed. I do not ever recommend going higher first you will make many enemies and won't be much fun the rest of the year. The other option is to live with it this year and push for new officers next year. Even if the same ones get elected they might get the message.
