Approach Position and Target
« on: April 23, 2012, 11:32:36 PM »
How many boards left should i consistently stand from my target (i'm a righty)? For example, should i always have six boards between my target board and the edge of left foot on the approach? I'm getting so many different opinions, and i'm starting to overthink this. I heard you should take into account the width of your shoulders, drifting, etc. Should i use my right foot, or left foot as my guide where to stand?

   I appreciate advise on this.

More important than where you start is where you slide.  Having said that, everyone is different. Sometimes you want to slide left of target to open up the lane, or for playing straighter you will slide closer to your target (left to right).

Try different angles and you might be surprised what works on any given day.

Dick Ritger videos talks about "personal number" and the formula is easy to learn. It's old school but it works.

Talk to a coach.  Best if someone trained can watch you.

Most coaches will recommend using the inside edge of your sliding foot as a reference for where you are standing.

You can do an internet search on Personal Number to get more info on that.  Here is a start on it.

Note on Personal Number:   It is based off of the Base Number for the bowler.   Normal Base Number is usually between 6-8 boards.  Base Number is how far the  (center of) ball is from the inside edge of the sliding foot at release.  In the  example they use in that link above, they are assuming a Base Number of 7.

Knowing your Personal Number will allow you to know where to stand to play straight up the boards.  To play different angles, you should talk to a coach, or maybe someone else here can help you with that.  Not sure I can explain it properly.

I teach the Ritger method and it is old school AND it still does work.  For some people the concept is hard to understand from the tapes but the line bowling in awesome.
