I love the concept and believe that USBC should set the patterns and understand that they will. The thread on bowl.com says the patterns will be available on line for free. I certainly would like to use one of the patterns in my tournaments instead of leaving the patterns up to the center and insuring the integrity of the pattern. I personally would not mind awards being tied to the patterns with the easiest pattern qualifying for only lower level awards or maybe rings can only be earned for the white and blue with blue slightly upgraded. USBC is saying these are optional and I might like to see them mandated in the future or again if the house chooses not to participate the bowlers can not recieve the honor awards. I was a director for many years for the local association and saw centers allowed to run illegal patterns and called in advance of inspection for way too long. I would like to see a little more integrity and let the leagues choose the levels they would like to compete.

It will not be mandated although I think it should happen. The issue at hand is this...not all bowling centers are capable of affording the high tech lane machines. There are a lot of pad machines still out there. Another factor that come into play is the condition of the lane surface especially if it is wood.

Our center does still use a pad machine,so if they do not offer patterns for these machines we would not be able to participate. I hope they offer the patterns, know that they do or did for sport and PBA.

We bowled on the white pattern last Sunday in our travel league and the lanes started out pretty slick from the 5 board in. The real crankers where able to get it back from outside but the tweeners and strokers couldn''t play out there.. They had to play up 10..

They then opened up a little each game and by the 5th game the best shot for me was playing 20 to 10 with an aggressive ball..It was interesting to say the least..

To see how good the PBA guys were on this pattern this week made me realize why I am just a house hack bowler.. LOL..

I was told the place we bowled at for travel (Cityview Lanes in FT Worth, TX.) is a "test" center for the new USBC patterns..

Test centers listed in this article.  http://www.bowl.com/news/xmlburner.jsp?xa=./webapps/ROOT/news/main/data/111309RedWhiteBlue.xml

I agree with tburky.....which machine used/lane conditioner and the lane surface/topography will make a big factor on how the R/W/B patterns will play.  What looks easy for a pro on a less than one year old pristine synthetic at NorthRock in Wichita....may play like the house condition from hell on your old worn out wood w/ Guardian put down by a Century 100.

Qualifying where pro's break down a condition correctly and Joe Bowler bowling in his 5 man hdcp league may also play totally different.

Based on what is being done in the PBA tournament, it looks to me that USBC has come up with another loser which may be an even bigger block than what you can do with the 3 unit rule.  Do those guys in Texas know nothing about lane conditions?  I would even be willing to bet they will blame the PBA scoring farce on the balls rather than their ridiculous patterns.  Wonder if they will rethink the patterns?

What I have heard is the thinking was to bridge the gap between house patterns and sport patterns. Kind of like the USBC is attempting to creat the equivalent of the Kegel Challenge patterns.

I would be interested to see the PBA bowl on a couple of the Kegel Challenge patterns and see how much they light those up. The Challenge patterns are a nice bridge, but hit some sport patterns for a few weeks then go and play on those and it seems like you have a 3 foot wide target to hit out there.

Honestly, they know patterns, the program is too simple.  But, I doubt that idea is due to the guys who know how complex lane patterns are.

Yes, Cityview is a test center.  They had the Red pattern in certain leagues for four weeks and now they are testing the White Pattern for the next three weeks and then will test the Blue pattern in select leagues for four weeks.

Fort Worth South Travel league will be bowling at Cityview this Sunday - probably on the Red Pattern.
