Haven't Bowled since College....looking to get back into it
« on: March 28, 2023, 04:27:05 PM »
Outside of a few games here or there with friends using exclusively house equipment, I'm thinking of getting back into bowling so I can spend more time with my Pops.

It has been 13-14 years since I bowled competitively, at which time I was 195 average on house & 185 on the last PBA shot league.  I'm trying to remember what kind of stuff I had in my arsenal back then to get a good idea on where to start with a simple 3 ball setup as I get into the swing of things. I know I remember having some Brunswick stuff like the Inferno, Ragin Inferno & Twisted Fury.

What would be the best next steps to get started? I feel like almost every house around me no longer has Pro Shops inside of them so how I would I go about getting my PAP & other stats again? Its all been so long

First, good to see you back in the sport.  Depending on the area you live, some of us may be able to recommend some shops to visit.  Good shops will of course measure your span, take a look at things like PAP, and then base recommendations off of that.

In terms of brands, all of the major brands have a solid lineup of equipment these days. The major brands are:
Storm:  Storm, Roto Grip, 900 Global
Brunswick:  Brunswick, DV8, Radical, Hammer, Columbia 300, Ebonite, Track
Motiv:  Motiv
California Bowling:  Lane Masters, Swag

I'd lean you towards a good benchmark ball to start and then you can build an arsenal from there.

Good luck!

The advice I would add on balls.

start with one ball; use it to ensure that the fit is correct so that you can implement any tweaks to the 2nd and 3rd ball you might buy.  finding a proshop that you can trust on recommendations and getting your fit correct every time is very important.

another piece of advice;  your own bowling shoes are an underrated and somewhat undervalued piece of equipment.  find comfortable shoes that are your own.

This is often overlooked by many new or returning bowlers.  I tell people to spend as much on their shoes as they would on a new ball because they will last much longer and proper shoes/soles will affect your game just as much or more than a new ball.

This is a good tip too.  Probably best to start with a good benchmark type of ball that you can add around to like Tommyboy74 said.
