USBC Rules changes...
« on: July 18, 2022, 12:47:53 PM »
Just as an FYI.  Effective 8/1/22 the USBC has rescinded the pandemic emergency rules as follows:

Isopropyl alcohol no longer permitted during sanctioned competition.  The dry towel only rule is back in full effect.

Leagues and tournaments can no longer be competed on a single lane.  Must use an adjoining pair of lanes for sanctioned competition.

USBC also announced that they will be certifying lanes again at bowling centers starting in January 2023.  Certification will be for 3 years at a time, and the cost to bowling centers will be $30/lane.  The certification process takes 5 minutes per lane.

All of this sounds reasonable.. just returning to how things were pre-pandemic.

The certification one will be interesting, especially with the entire PBA certification thing supposedly kicking off this fall. While we know Bowlero is rejoining the BPAA, it will be interesting to see how they handle the certification process, especially as they'll be rolling out their own.

I was on our local board, and I can tell you it takes way more than 5 minutes to certify a lane.

The USBC is claiming 5 min per lane.  They ask the lane to be fully stripped of oil, and are telling centers that a lane can immediately be oiled and put back in service as soon as they finish inspecting it.

They can claim whatever they like, I certified lanes for years and it's grueling work if you intend to actually do it properly.

Someone has to crawl under the pindeck on their stomach and measure lane width at two different points, flat gutter depth, level the lane, inspect the kick panels, etc., as well as check the integrity of everything you can check from the bottom. Then there are depression/topography checks, oil tapes and weighing the pins. You're looking at 15-20 minutes per lane if you do everything you're supposed to (assuming one person is doing the entire cert) -- most importantly, giving the person doing the test time to recover physically every few lanes. It is tough work, and the position you have to be in to do the under-deck stuff puts a lot of pressure on your neck and will make you lightheaded as hell every time you stand up if you stand too quickly. And I was in my 20s then.

I get it.  I had family members also on the local board.  Doesn't sound like the local associations will be doing the certification.  The USBC makes it sound like a team from HQ will be traveling around doing the certifications.

I will be surprised if Bowlero pays to have all of their centers certified by the USBC.  Could help to explain their new association being rolled out so quickly.

I thought I had read somewhere that USBC had a new machine for inspecting lanes.

Took me a while to find it because I could not remember where I had read it otherwise I would have posted the info earlier.

From article:

Inspections will be completed utilizing the Automatic Certification Evaluation Tool, also known as ACE. ACE is a state-of-the-art topography recording device that utilizes digital sensors and a precision-machined frame to collect lane data and generate certification reports in real time.

ACE will record all of the data points used for certification on a lane in approximately five minutes, compared to a 10- to 12-minute window with tools previously used in the process.

The data will automatically be input into a report, creating a more efficient collection method compared to previous practices that required local associations to manually record the information for each lane.

After the inspection is completed, the data will calculate the percentage of measurements that meet USBC specifications and ultimately place the center in a tier.

WHAT IS ACE?

ACE (Automatic Certification Evaluation tool) is a combination of several precision measuring devices that work together to make center inspections more efficient and accurate. ACE was developed in-house by our Equipment Specifications and Certifications team, with important help from several team members in other departments.

ACE utilizes five digital dial indicators with custom designed sleds, three digital levels and four digital laser distance measuring tools. These tools all connect, via Bluetooth technology, to the inspector’s laptop, where a custom-made software records the data and loads it into a data collection spreadsheet. All of this works to allow one inspector to complete all of the requirements for an annual inspection of a lane in less than five minutes.

TIERED CENTER CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

Following a study of the lane certification process and analyzing data from lane inspections, USBC determined it will implement a center certification program, featuring tiered levels of certification and a national staff of lane inspectors, over the next five years.

Details of the tiered center certification program will be announced no later than the 2022 USBC Convention.

Bingo.

I had to change my pants after the pinsetter came down on me around 10 years ago. I was real lucky- no injuries just scared the crap out of me.

Now that the process is automated using a scanner, perhaps they really can do it in 5 minutes.  They claim their team of 4 national inspectors will be able to certify 1/3 of centers every year, and then restart the certification process every 3 years.    To meet that goal, they would need to test 10 bowling centers per day.  That seems a little optimistic, although maybe many centers will forego being certified and just hold unsanctioned events.

Have we reached the point where sanctioned competition isn't important anymore to most bowlers?  I used to care.  Now I don't.  If my league voted to be unsanctioned this upcoming Fall season it wouldn't break my heart.  Most bowlers do what they want these days and bend the rules regularly.

The guy who taught me how to do it told me "If you ever hear something moving, go forward and roll into the pit. It'll hurt then, but it won't kill you." Gee, thanks. Does OSHA know we're doing this?

Utilizing the Automatic Certification Evaluation Tool, or ACE for short, inspections will be finished. ACE is a cutting-edge topography recording device that gathers lane data and produces certification reports instantly using digital sensors and a precisely machined frame. gorilla tag
Compared to a 10- to 12-minute window with instruments previously utilized in the process, ACE will record all of the data points necessary for certification on a lane in about five minutes.
