Have you ever or ever seen someone else...

shoot 299 and leave the head pin standing as the only pin???

I did it...

Going for my first 300 back in February...got the first 11, all were good shots in the pocket.  Surprisingly, I'm not nervous at all, not even thinking about it really...laughing, joking, high-fiving, having a good time.

Get up on the approach for #12, a calm comes over me, cleared my head...everything is good to go.

Start my approach, backswing, heading toward the line...uh-oh...my brain says "don't pull it"...YANK!!!

The ball is left of target off my hand, heading left of the head pin toward the 2-4 and hooking left even more...

All I'm thinking is "NO! You choked!!!" and then I think "Hey, GREAT! 293-294...odd score to shoot and more rare than a 300".

The ball hits the pins and they start cascading around the pin deck.

For a second, the 1-9 is standing, a messenger comes rolling around, clips the 9-pin...it falls off the back of the pin deck, as the messenger continues rolling, curling toward the head pin.

Running out of juice, it lightly taps the head pin enough to make it wobble...

299...with the head pin left standing...

Anybody else ever do that???

Don't know that I'd be sharing that if I'd done it...

But no, never seen or done that.  I've seen a hit that should have left at least the 1-2-4 backdoor it for a 300 - that's the closest I've seen to what you describe on the 12th shot.

That's why I'm just now posting it...it took that long to get over the shame...LOL

City tournament in 2008 a guy buried the front 11, missed the head pin right (right handed bowler) and a pin bounced around, leaving him just the headpin. There is a joke always going around when we see him.

I've seen a guy do it once. This was his first time with more than 6 or 7 in a row, so he's pretty nervous, rolling well, but you can see him shaking on the approach. The first 9, no real problems(couple of trip-4's). 10th is dead brooklyn, 11th is dead flush, number 12 is way, way outside, buried dead flush in the 3-6 pocket, leaving the 1-2-4, something bounces out of the pit knocking the 4 forward into the 2 forward into the headpin, which just rocks and rocks but refuses to fall. The guy, meanwhile, had turned around in disgust after whiffing the headpin, only to hear the crowd roaring, he whips around in time to see the 2 fall into the headpin, he falls to his knees(praying?) and flops on his back after the rack finally picked up the headpin.
The laneman ran down the lane to the pindeck to get him the pin, as a souvenir. I think he still has it to this day.
