USBC Rules Question - Rule 108, 108A, 108B
« on: December 21, 2011, 02:12:57 PM »
Tonight a bowler on the other team punched the ball return and then punched a wall because he was bowling really bad.  After punching both, he became injured and could not bowl anymore.  Rule 108 - Failure to complete game came into play and rule 108A was applied: an injury occurred, therefore 1/10th of league's absentee score was added for the remaining frames.

Now here's my gripe:  He was injured because of throwing a fit while bowling badly - He wasn't injured while in the act of bowling and it wasn't due to any sort of accident.  In addition, the absentee score actually boosted his score as the absentee score was better than what he was bowling.  So he ended up with a higher score than if he had finished bowling without punching anything.

As an alternative, should our league officer applied rule 108B instead which states that the remaining frames should be marked zero because the bowler stopped bowling "Without Cause"?

The rules are here on pages 51-52:

I'm curious to see how any of you would interpret this as a league officer as the rules seem to have shades of grey and are open to interpretation...and for the record, he probably has a broken hand - he wasn't faking injury.  The question is, was it "without cause"?

I'm not a rules official, but I think it was handled correctly.  Even though the reason for the injury was less than innocent, it was still a real injury and he would be eligible for the pins as you described even though it worked out as an advantage for him.

Fixed your link to make it easier for others to look at it.

I agree with Strider, the situation seemed to be handled correctly.

Additionally, when this happens, the way to carry out the rest of the game is unique and often done incorrectly.  Before continuing the game with the 1/10th rule, the score must be completely added up to the last bowled frame.  If the last frame was an open, easy enough.  If it was a strike or spare, the bowler does not get any added benefit from the non-bowled frames.  (i.e. a spare would earn only 10 pins, not 10 pins plus the next ball)

I agree with the other posters.  It was handled correctly.  I have been in situations where "without cause" occurred.  The bowler got fed up, changed his shoes and left.  One time in the middle of a game and another incident after the second game. (2 different people on 2 different leagues)

Thanks for the responses...to this guys credit, he did  try and threw one shot after destroying his hand.  He threw a gutter ball and that pretty much cost his team the game.  It's just amazing to me that rules are written in a way that can and sometimes will help and inadvertently reward someone for foolishly injuring themself.

Regardless of how he came about the injury Rule 108 has to be applied. Next year you can put a rule in the leauge by-laws that covers this problem. If there is no by-law on how to handle the issue, the leauges executive board has to defer to USBC rules. I had the same problem in my leauge and I'm the President.
