Used ball prices..
« on: August 26, 2009, 08:45:00 AM »
I've noticed that a lot of people trying to selling used equipment here are really overpricing their stuff..

One example I noticed was for a 1st line ball from Storm for $85 plus shipping. Plus shipping? That would put it near $100 for a used ball and, unless you have close to the same span, it would cost you about $40 to have it plugged and redrilled. For another $40 you could buy one NIB.

My rule of thumb is that, if it's used and a NEW release or a popular release, the ball should only command 50% of the NIB price (at best).

NOTE: This rule does not apply to Lane#1 balls due to the nature of people that buy them..

Am I really off on this??

Guess it depends where the person bought the ball. If they spent $200 for one out the door at a pro shop and they ask for $100 shipped, they still aren't getting half of what they paid. If the ball can be bought online for $120 and they ask for $60 shipped, that's roughly $40 profit or even less if you consider Paypal fees. It's much better to sell used balls locally due to shipping costs, but people generally are not going to get $100 for a used ball, even if it was never thrown down the lane. I very well might be cheap, but the most I'd ever spend on a used ball is $80 shipped.

I agree with that trend of overpriced used ball's on here. I also agree that it depend's on where that person bought that ball they are trying to sell. Price is all in what the person is willing to pay.

In my opinion a fair price is 50% of the original NIB Online value plus shipping.  I think the trend of overpricing has happened due to the amount of haggling and lowballing some people try to do on this site.  Gotta start high to get the actual dollar amount you want.

I guess it depends on which side you want to look at.

What NIB price are you going off of?

That $120 internet ball is going to cost another $40-70 to get drilled - maybe more depending if you use grips/slug and if the shop charges more.  I believe my local shop is up to $60 for a blank drill and $15 for grips/slug.

That $120 ball just set you back $195, but people only think it's worth no more than $60.  If you're lucky they will add shipping to that, but most likely they will want that to include shipping.

Now, depending on the drill, most people will end up just getting the thumb plugged and redrilled.  That's $15-20 around here, and another $10 for a slug.

Now the person that spent $195 on a ball is selling it for 1/3 of what they paid, and the new person is getting a ball for 1/2 the cost of a new ball.

I have purchased too many used balls from here to list. I will not pay over 50% of the ball's internet sale value unless the ball fis my span and will not have to be redrilled.

Supply and demand generally dictates the ultimate sales price. That's the way it ought to be.

I sell a lot of stuff on here and I think 50% of internet value is not correct. You are going to have to pay another $50 or $60 for drilling with grips/slug regardless where you buy it online so that cost needs to be factored in when buying a used ball. No way the seller should just eat all that cost. I always buy used stuff with the layout I desire so all I have to do is shorten the span by plugging the thumb and replacing the slug. That's $20 bucks at the shop I go to. Then if you have to replace the grips, that's another $10. So tops you will have $30 in the ball instead of $50 or $60 you have to pay to get a NIB drilled up. I personally buy grips and slugs online so for me a set of grips and a slug is around $6 bucks total.

Lets use for example a Virtual Gravity. These cost right at $145 shipped online, plus another $50 for drilling. That is $195 total. If someone here has one that's a single drill with low games and in MINT condition with the layout you desire, that ball is worth $90-$95 shipped IMO. Then if you have to put $30 in it (for a thumb plug and redrill and grips and slug)you have basically a brand new ball for $120-$125 instead of $195. To me that's a fair amount of savings. I am not talking about a ball that's all beat up with a 100 games on it, I am talking about a low game like new used new release ball. Of course the older balls with lots of games should bring much lower money.

I know people want stuff as cheap as they can get it, and so do I but you have to take each deal on a case by case basis such as is the ball a newer hot release or an older ball and consider the original drill charge when buying all used balls.

50% of the online price plus shipping or drill it like I want it with my span and we can talk about the price. Here just in case middle finger 4 3/16 ring 4 1/4 cut to cut.

It is all a matter of preference. I believe that there is a such thing as "new ball carry." If I have 70% of the cost of a new ball in a used ball, I would rather buy the new ball and drill it exactly like I want it.

This makes sense for me because the cost to drill with grips and slug is less than 10 bucks, plus the time that it takes me to layout and drill the ball. If I was still paying 65 bucks a ball for drilling, I might look at it different.

Of the used stuff we sell at the shop, I don't ever recall asking for more than $90 (drilling included) for the "pristine" newest balls. Most of what we sell goes between $50-$75 with drilling included.

I don't buy on this site because I've got plenty to use, but if what you're saying is true I'd have to agree that the sellers are out of touch.

Good points..

If I can get away with just plugging the thumb and leaving the layout the way it is, then it's worth more to me so I'll pay more. The pro shop I go to will charge me only $30 to plug/slug/new inserts for a ball.

But, the biggest competitor (IMHO) is ebay. You can pick up a 1st quality ball for just about what some of these sellers want for used.

Also, put a price down for what you want amd don't play the "make me an offer" game. That blows. If you put down a price and put "negotiable" then that's netter

The problem I have with Ebay is the specs you get sometimes. I used to buy alot of stuff on ebay until the specs I was getting were just horrible. Not blems, but 1 inch pins 4 oz top weight. Stuff that was hard to make work if your looking for a specific reaction.

Yea, but very few if anyone is going to have the choice of paying only $10 to drill a ball. Most shops charge $10 for just the slug.

if that was the case for everyone, I understand and agree with your thinking.

I agree about the used ball prices being high.  I used to sell a lot of lightly used equipment on here, however with shipping prices going up and other factors it is probably better if you can sell them locally.  I have a Senior friend that sells most of my used stuff (14lbers) to the local Senior leagues for around $30 - $40 a ball.  The one caveat that should be noted, if the ball doesnt fit the Seniors they wont buy it!  So I am lucky that some of the Seniors have my same spans and fittings.
