used ball prices
« on: December 30, 2016, 10:09:03 AM »
I would like to get every ones opinion on just how much you can charge for a used ball. I am talking a single drill that has been maintained. We will say a current release. One year release. Beyond one year. IMO -- my estimates that I will say, are -- current-- 80 - 95---- one year-- 50 - 75 and older than one year-- 40 or less.

If it's something recent and well maintained $60-70 + shipping seems fair for a mid-higher end release.

If it's more than a year old I've thought $40-45 + shipping was pretty fair, also for mid-low end

It also depends on demand. You need to be flexible as a seller

Depends on the demand in most cases. But if it has been drilled for a year with games on it, the value isn't as high.

I think this is feasible, if the ball is on VERY high demand. Otherwise, in recent years, people have been cheap and reticent about buying used balls, in my experience.

I think no matter the age or number of games, it depends, these days, on how desirable the ball is (not how good it is, just how desirable).

If it has more than 1 drilling, it's almost impossible to sell; heck, they're impossible to give away for the cost of shipping.

That said, people tell me that Facebook is having much better success selling balls than when trying to sell them from bowling bulletin boards, like here and BBE. I don't "do" Facebook; so I can't comment on that venue.

I recall a few years ago trying to sell a single drill, very few games, medium priced ball for $40 used. One guy in California offered me $30; I explained that shipping from NJ would be $25+. That would net me $5 which would be spent on printing label, boxing it up and taking it to the nearest FEDEX - which would eat up my $5 profit. I told him it would easier for me to throw it in the garbage. Didn't make any difference to him. :)

I guess the bottom line is if you think the price is fair, sell it. If not keep it.

There is definitely a bigger pool of people in the Facebook groups Charlest.

It all comes down to being fair, flexible, and understanding the price of shipping on both sides

FB groups with ppl in your local area is the way to go. When I revamped my equipment and wanted to start from scratch... I sold all but 3 balls out of 22 that was for sale in my local area including outside the city. The other 5 balls went to Chicago, Washington, Arizona, and Florida... I'm in California.

I had set a return value for each ball and was stiff. Minimum I made was $15 up to $60. Just like selling a used car, if the head light lens are crystal clear, it can increase the value of your car. So with the balls I sold, I cleaned it - dull or polished and kept original boxes for most.

I get better prices using Craigslist than any other method for used stuff.

Ebay is a giant waste of time as is a site such as this one.

ballreviews used to be good a few years ago to sell stuff, you had a nice group that knew each other and you had trust.

Unfortunatly, FB is the only way I can sell balls anymore. With that being said, FB is also a major pain to sell stuff on. You here every excuse in the book.

You have to base your prices on the level of the ball as well. You can't sell a low end ball in the 70-80 range. You can't sell a ball that is scratched and beat up in the high range. You have to keep in mind that the ball is used and still not the same price as new if you are selling a slightly used newer ball..

Bowlers are cheap, you can do a single drill Code Black for example, cheap bowlers will go no higher than $40 shipped. I got tired of their shit (cheap bowlers) it's a damn bowling ball, not a house or a car. All the correspondence, haggling etc just made me sick.

I now head up to my local center on Saturday morning and give the balls to youth bowlers.

Yep. Last offer I got on a single drill current ball in mint shape was 30 shipped. for the ten bucks I'll give it to a kid or dump it in the river.

As someone who buys a lot of used equipment, I will say I factor in what it's going to cost me to get the ball plugged and re drilled into how much I'm willing to pay. It ends up being the deal breaker for me sometimes.

Hard to outlay a big chunk of cash on a ball you have no idea how it's been taken care of or how much it's been used. Especially if you're going to end up within 25% of new cost.

I rarely buy used equipment for the aforementioned reasons above. Although it's hard to always pay full price Every Time as well, at least I won't have to worry about plug/redrill, deoil, resurface, etc.

A better investment in my book.

If you can however find a diamond in the rough, (something cheap with low games, and almost no plug work)  by all means go for it.  That the beauty of being different, some folks have it made from time to time finding pre-owned equipment.
