used ball prices-whats fair?
« on: March 10, 2004, 06:34:52 PM »
Why does everyone say used ball prices are too high?

ex
new high price ball
cost $140+drilling $40=$180

most people think they get them cheaper and drilling for free

most poeople who buy used probably only redrill thumb(cheaper)

my thoughts

that $180 for a $100 if very few games is not a bad deal(most say)

i can get it new for cheaper-i doubt it and can you get it drilled for free also-if you can why are you shopping used?

Mid priced ball

$85 new + $40 drilling=$125

i think $65-$70 is fair

Am i way off base here? im not talking about balls with 50-60 gmaes, but ones with less than 5.

Do as many people get free drilling as they say?
then i may understand, but i cant believe many do-and if they do why buy used

The reason i say
i drill and test a lot of balls for myself-just to see how they react for other people-a good driller will know how things roll(work). I sell them right after.
post some here, sell some to friends(who gladly pay-they arent cheap)
but on this site everyone thinks i sell way to high-why?
these balls are current models with low games

people want a new ultimate inferno with 2 games for $50-$70 bucks

its all about the deal......getting a deal...why do people shop at flea markets, or meijers....same mind set.  sometimes its about the negotiation as well.  since you drill balls, answer me this please.  what doe pap stand for, its driving me nuts.  I just got a new uranium, getting drilled today.. I want it to get down the alley a little, but not way down and be all snap....what do you suggest. I am a stoker, love to play around 10 straight up or 10 out to 5 even....let me know what you think.

$70 plus $40 to plug and redrill=$110

Now I've got a plugged ball and I saved $15.  What's the point?

In your example of the higher end ball, you would be saving around $40.  That's not too bad.

pap
positive axis point

most people ask about drilling and that makes a huge difference

i have bought used and
only plug the thumb-i am only looking for certain drills(and spans) where i only have to do the thumb-sometimes i can put a slug in it and it would look brand new.

I can understand if they were doing a whole redrill, but most ask for how its drilled-i guess i assummed(i know what it means) thats what they were doing-trying to see if they only needed the thumb done.

You are assuming that most people will want to keep the layout the same as you set it up.  I would guess that maybe 25% of the people would fall into that category.  I would imagine that most people would want to put the layout of their choice on the ball, which requires a full plug.  I'd want to save at least 20 to 30% by buying a used ball.  Partly due to the fact that I know a ball that is on it's second drill is going to be really hard to resell when I don't want it anymore.

Just one man's opinion.

There are a lot of issues that need to be considered when buying or selling used stuff. But it basically comes down to how "hot" the ball you're selling is, the condition it is in, and what it's going to take the buyer to get the ball ready for  him/herself. I've been getting all of my plugging, drilling, etc free for a while, so I can afford to spend a bit more on the cost of the ball. On the other hand, someone who does have to pay $40 to get a ball set up might not want to spend $125 out the door for a used ball, even if it is something that is nearly new. It's just a preference thing. For me, I generally won't spend more than $50 shipped for a used ball, unless I already know the seller or it's something that I'm really anxious to get. That's just me.

i still dont understand

people say

why pay $100 for a used ball when i can get it for $20-$40 more

its really $70 more (drilling)

Really $80, but ill take off $10 to get the thumb redone.
Unless you get them drilled free-the i understand

I keep repeating myself-ask about the pattern and span and look for the drilling you want-it may be close and then and only then should you think about paying the $100

im just wondering-i dont have a problem getting rid of most my stuff-actually people really come to me asking.

i understand $50-60 sounds great, but $100 doesnt sounds that bad

just trying to get a feel on everyone perspective-thanks for replying

We seldom have this situation but for a new high dollar ball with less than 20 games on it our “normal” price would be $60 for the ball and then charge for whatever work had to be done, inserts, plugging, etc. We sometimes get some touring pro’s balls that we do this with. Generally try to get them into the ball for ½ new price or less.

If we would have a ball used less than 5 games then we would try to get our cost out of the ball, plug it for free, and charge for any inserts.

I think a fair price for a used ball is half the price of a new ball.  The ball has to be drilled to fit you and ready for use.  This also assumes the surface is in good/excellent condition.

For example, a new ball in your area cost $200 drlled.  The used ball should cost about $100 including the cost of the ball, plugging and redrilling, and any shipping costs.  If shipping, plugging and redrilling costs $40, the cost of the ball would be $60.

We are talking fair price.  However, everyone is looking for a deal.

Since I am purchasing a Silver Streak Pearl from you I feel qualified to respond to your post.  I can purchase a new SS Pearl for about $100 plus $25 for drilling.  Since you are selling me a ball with about 5 games on it, I was willing to pay about $75 for it.  I figure $25 off is saving me 25% for a ball that is practically new.  You offered to plug the thumbhole which means that all I have to do when I get the ball is to put in new inserts and have my thumbhole drilled so I feel that the price we negotiated is very fair.

If it were a ball with 50 games on it or so, I would not pay more then 50% of new cost, but for a low game ball I agree that most people are looking for deals and the saving they were to get with a 25% discount off of new would still be great.

Just my 2 cents...

Alto

P.S. Did you receive the pm that I sent you yesterday about payment?

I agree with wilbert,

50% of new is about right, unless it is a rare ball,
then you might be able to get more out of it.

When I buy used, I am experimenting anyway, so
I am getting the whole thing plugged.  Also
my hands are on the large side so most of the stuff
has to get plugged.
