used ball sale and warrenty
« on: August 04, 2009, 03:23:24 PM »
Here's a situation I'd like opinions on.

Customer buys a USED ball that is plugged and redrilled for him through our shop.  Its a nearly (less then 10 games) new orginal Black Widow and we charged him $100 out the door.

6 mo later the ball has lane damage and is cracked all the way around the ball.  Unfortunately it is over the 1 year warrenty that our dist. might have honored.  The ball is over 2 years old and he's used it for over 6 mo.

Do you......

1. let him argue with the management for a replacement ball
2  tell him he bought a used item and he's SOL
3. prorate him $75 credit because he did use the ball for 6 mo.
4. give him $100 credit even though he bought a used ball that is past      manufacterers warrenty.

Of course the feeling at the time is that the bowler wants a 100% new ball replacement.

Well, he did know that it was used, and therefore been handle before. Thats why the price was considerably lower than what a new original Black Widow would be. I personally don't have pro shop experience, but I've worked with you before. If the first option, with the management being you guys, I don't see how thats really a solution. 2, to be honest, is possible. That is a risk you take by buying/drilling a used ball. 3, would be the fairer option. 4, I don't see a value for you, since Mark drilled took time to drill up the ball, leaving you guys with no gain for his services.

If it was caused by lane damage the center should be responsible for replacing it.

And the majority of the bowling centers have "We are not responsible for damaged bowling balls or stolen equipment." When you take a ball that's been damaged up to the counter all they say is "That's a risk you took when you rolled your ball down the lane.

Some houses will help by either replacing the ball if it was within 6 months and it's still available, repairing the ball if possible, or give a hefty discount for a new replacement.

If you want to be nice and maybe keep a customer for the long term, I'd do the 3rd option.

Once the ball has been plugged, there goes the warranty.

It's not really on the pro shop.  The bowling center should accommodate the customer.  Anything the pro shop does is going way above and beyond.  If the guy is one of your regular customers, you might drill him another used ball.

i have a VE that after bowling 2 complete gms with it the 2nd frame of the 3rd gm the lanes took a chunk off the top edge of my thumb hole and the owners gave it to the pro shop and were told they could fix it by plugging it (hello ball was 2 days old) wasn't about to have it plugged so they sanded the edge not as bad for feel, but now i need to have tape cause they messed up the size of the thumb (insde).

wont be bowling in that house again( neither will the rest of my team)

Yea Erin I'd say it really just depends on how important this guy is to your business.  No matter what you do you're going to be losing on some end.

If you tell him he bought a used ball and he's SOL he won't come back, and probably bash your shop which might cost you a customer or two down the line as well.

If you give him $75 credit, you're losing $75, plus the man power and time it took to fit his needs, as well as a profit on another piece.

Same goes for the $100 credit.

I would honestly say that Larry M's idea is probably the best.  Give him a new piece at the cost you get it at.  If he's not happy with that then you won't win no matter what you do.  Just make sure you let him know just how much he is saving with your at cost price.

again you throwing the ball down the lane is a risk you take... they were going to fix the problem by plugging the thumb and making it good. What more did you want them to do?

I have filled and redrilled many thumbholes.  I think you end up with a better overall product...I even like it better than slugs.  The inside of the thumbhole is durable and waterproof, tape adheres better, and the edges are much less prone to cracking and chipping.  If plug material didn't cost so damn much, I'd drill a larger thumbhole in my NIB balls and fill them just to have a better feeling "slug."

You missed out, dude.

Find him a black widow on this site for 40, and plug, drill, and hand it to him.

This is probably the best option so far.

Thanks for the ideas.  I'll have to let you know how it goes.  Of course what this customer wants is a brand new ball. When he originally bought a USED ball.  He's also not a return customer.  Not a league bowler.  We've only seen him once that time he bought the used ball.

I don't deal in used balls, but if I did I'd have a statement for the customer to sign saying that the sale is as is with no warranty coverage at all.  If something went wrong with the ball as a result of my plug/drill work, I'd repair it at no cost despite the statement, but otherwise he's on his own.

I treat all customers the same.  In your shoes, I'd tell him that the damage to the ball was no fault of my work and that he would have to deal with center management.  --  JohnP

I wouldn't worry about him then, just trying to get something for nothing.
