Mens ONLY tournament
« on: February 20, 2012, 04:12:10 AM »
The USBC Assoication Policy Manual states:

If state public accommodation laws allow, the association may offer a men‘s only and women‘s only championship tournament, in addition to the open tournament.

Have you "guys" ever bowled in a sanctioned mens only tournament?

not lately. they've all been "open". i don't know if men only tourny's still exist's. i don't have a problem allowing women to bowl, i definitely do not like the fence that is still put up for women only tourney's.

if it's a scratch tournament, i can see why women would have their own. but if it's handicap, what's the difference?

Our association has a "open" tournament and a womens tournament.  Only one or two women bowl the open tournament and they have no realistic chance of winning anything.

Don't get me wrong.  I'm not a sexist by any stretch.  I just think if we are all going to be one body united, then what's wrong with having a women's tournament, a men's tournament and an open tournament.  Nobody is left out.

Does it bother me bowling against women?  Not at all, regardless if it's handicapped or scratch.  I think it's odd to say we want to be equal/together with an exception.  If there's an exception, than we're not equal.

Sorta related to this topic.  A few years back, a women's team was attempting to gain entry into our men's only league at the start of the season.  The women were all 180 and above averages and would be competitive as it is only a 16 lane house and we were only a 12 team league or so, and looking to grow.  In the initial discussion, it appeared the the motion to allow them to bowl would pass.  At that point, approx 3-4 teams spoke up and said if we allow women to bowl this league, they will not bowl.  Losing 4 teams to allow 1 didn't make sense so we voted against it.

So sexism is alive and well and is the reason we have "open" tournaments.  I believe if associations ran 3 tournaments, the mixed would fail because most men only bowl with the women in tournaments because the rules force them too.  YMMV

In the Association I'm with..we have all 3..Mens, Women's and Open.
In the Open we get several women...the only problem we have on occasion
is that some of the lower women bowlers, do not like it when a PBA women shows up to bowl.
But it open to all, that are part of our association.

Our association has all 3 as well and we get a good turn out in all 3 tournaments!  We get a good amount of women in the open and they have their own tournament as do the men.  I do believe that CA law states something along the lines of not being able to seperate sexes in things like this UNLESS there is one for them.  I.E. You can't tell a girl she can't play on the football team unless there is a girls football team as well.

We have a Mens and Womens tournament.

but the women can bowl in both. It would be sexist to only allow men to do something. Women can do that though.
