Using Tape Effecting Thumb Pitch?
« on: February 28, 2013, 03:29:32 PM »
I'm curious does using too much tape on either the top or the back of the thumb effect thumb pitch significantly or only a fraction that it shouldn't be anything to worry about? I have a ball with a mold that I'm either assuming didn't set right or my pro made a mistake where this particular thumb is too loose and I find myself putting 3 pieces up front and one on the back whereas the other 3 balls I use I only need one piece up front. I'm contemplating having him redo my mold to hopefully match my other three balls.

Thanks!

I don't see how it would affect the pitch.  Maybe the snugness of the hole but not the pitch itself.

Pitch no, but your span can change with the use of a lot of tape. I challenge anyone to give a good explanation on how it could, have heard the argument numerous times and do not buy into how tape can change your pitch.

If enough tape is used, YES it will effect pitch/angle of the thumb hole...check the pitch before & after using tape, it does effect it. And yes it can also increase the span as well.

3 pieces might be the limit for not affecting the pitch or, in practical terms, not affecting it too much. I know when I need to use 4 or more, it really does affect the pitch.

Putting it in the back of the thumb hole should NOT and if you need more than 2 or 3 pieces, consider putting it in the back and then putting a piece of slick black tape over the white tape (assuming we're talking about the white thumb hole tape here). That way, the thumb hole will get tighter, you won't affect the pitch anymore than you have to, and the back of your thumb won't stick to the abrasive white tape.

And, of course, next time, get a smaller thumb insert or have the thumb hole made smaller, keeping in mind that the thumb hole must be as large as your thumb ever gets.

Thanks everyone for the advice and insight! I'll probably have my proshop redo my thumb mold and check to make sure the thumb pitch/angle on my Dirty Look matches all my other equipment.
