Round to oval - need advice
« on: November 30, 2005, 02:01:44 AM »
How many of you for any reason (injury, etc...) had to switch to an oval thumb? Did your need to change you pitches? span? Need adjustment advice. I'm basically a zero-zero pitch. Thanks!

I went to oval from round this year.  I am going to get re-fit with a plugged old ball this week.  I am a Magic Carpet user and find that with the oval thumb holes and a traction type tape on the front of my thumb holes I still find myself falling out/dumping the ball at the line at times.  Also tend to not be as free wheeling w/ free armswing as before probably grabbing at the bottom.  That's a no-no.

So, with the re-fitting proceess I am thinking about going to shorter with forward in my fingers and 0 to a lil forward in my thumb not sure about lateral.  I am 1/16" reverse now.

Also, thinking about trying the Vice tape < http://www.viseinserts.com/ta_tape.htm > that LL mentioned this week here as I like the feel of Magic Carpets but would like to get away from enlarging the thumb hole by a 1/32" feel that's too much.

As always, feel and grip is such a personal thing YMMV.

I switched to Oval about a month or so ago.  I was using enough tape in the round that it eventually resembled an oval.  I will admit, it feels more natural.  I also went to 1/4 reverse in my thumb and shortened (i.e. more natural) span (I was throwing with a widened span to lock the thumb in).  I already had lateral pitch (3/16), but have experimented (with decent success) with 0 lateral.  Also, I learned a lot of bevel helped as well. My reasons for changing....a)I was beginning to hang, thus lofting more than usual b)I wanted a more relaxed fit with the aid of clearing my thumb quicker hence the reverse.

I also have a bevel sander to help 'fine tune' my thumb.  I would suggest you try it with an old ball before making the 'leap'.  Everyone is different and what works for me may not necessarily work for you.

Thanks guys! I think the "front" and "rear" bevel is the issue because I was really clean with the release laterally, but it was rubbing the back of my thumb wrong. I can fix that easily.

Are you using molded ovals or ovals drilled on a mill?
Where is it rubbing your thumb wrongly? (could be the angle)
Tapered/non-tapered?

I switched from round to molded ovals about 2 years ago and have always had a better feel but it never was just right.
Recently I started using drilled oval to keep the angle more accurate and after some trial and error I am getting close to that all illusive perfect feel.

It's a drilled oval, but was mostly carved out because the shop's Gilmac is a little loose. The rubbing area is on the back of my thumb. It feels like a rise. The front have a similar feeling. Sounds like it's not tapared then, right? that's why I'm thinking I need to bevel/sand at those spots.

Most people do not have a round thumb so an oval shaped thumb hole is the way to go. It allows for a snug fit on all surfaces of the thumb.

As some have stated above, many put tape in a round hole in such a manner as they end up make the thumb oval in shape.

Assuming your fit was good in the first place I don’t see why ovaling a thumb hole would require any change.

I’ve never known bevel to hurt the back (knuckle side) of your thumb. That is almost always caused by bending (knuckling) the thumb. Often you can correct that simply by making the hole tight enough that you can’t bend your thumb. If you can’t hold onto the ball when the thumb is kept relatively straight then you should look at moving the pitch forward.

The damage is behind the knuckle. I've haven't had a problem with bending my thumb before. It's a new world for me.

I should have said back bevel hurting the thumb.

It is possible that a lack of bevel on the front could force the thumb towards the back of the hole as your thumb is exiting.

If I understand your sore spot that really sounds more like a ridge in the back of the thumb. Maybe where the shell and core meets, flaws in the coverstock, core, etc.

See Bevel section of FAQ section.

With ovals one often needs different amounts of bevel on front and sides!

Many very top bowlers hate ovals and prefer making them from round thru tape.

I've been liking mine for the first time because of the addition of TA-1d tape from vise in teh back of my oval thumbhole!  YUM!

I have round, sort of. On the right side of my thumb is ovaled a titch. The left side is round. I have a strange thumb, so I can not use pure round and didn't like the feel of real oval. It took me a few tries to find what feels good, works for me.

I would not suggest this to many, I use a workout tool to get the side the way I need it and if I screw up, it's drill out and do over ! The biggest reason, for me, I have a 'groove' so to speak, that is oval, if I don't get it just right, the thumb is to large and just doesn't feel right.

Probably not what you asked in the first place, but that's my 2 cents worth.
