When is a ball "used"?
« on: February 02, 2010, 11:43:56 AM »
Basically when do you decide that a ball that costs x amount of games on it is only worth x amount of money?

Or how many games on a ball till it is pointless to buy used? 40,90, 100? just wondering the opinion of people out there.

Well when I goto sell a ball I take into account how old it is and approximately how many game's I've used this ball.

For example:

I have a Storm T-Road Pearl. It's about 4 year's old now and has well over 1000 game's on it. Because of the age and # of game's on it I would probably list it for sale at around $20 shipped.

Now I have a Hammer No Mercy Beat'n. It's about 5 year's old, but I've only used it for about 60 game's over the last 5 year's. I would list it for sale at around $50 shipped because the ball is still basically new considering it's age.

BTW, neither ball are for sale, yet.

As for how many game's are on a ball before it's pointless to buy it used. That will depend on what you're looking to use it for. Poeple on here truely beleive in ball death, where the hook potential of the ball is gone. I have never seen this happen to ANY bowling ball I have used in my life. If ball death exsisted I should know since I never clean my equipment between set's. I myself probably wouldn't buy a used ball with more than 150+ game's on it unless it's a ball that I absolutely love that's starting to get very hard to find.

Like cars, it's used the moment it comes off the lot.  In this case, once it has holes in it, it's used.  Period.  Drill it, put it back in the box and sell it.  It's used.

But like cars, there's a difference between a 1 year old used car with 10K miles and a 5 year old used car with 50K miles.  And just like cars, some are still going strong at 100 games (50K miles) while others are basically dead at that point.  I won't pay the same for a used Magic at 100 games compared to a used Counter Strike at 100 games.  The Magic is basically middle aged or older.  The Counter Strike is just getting broken in, even if their original prices were similar.

Another factor in deciding cost is how many time's the ball has been plugged and redrilled. I've sold a couple ball's with 4 drilling's on it only because the buyer was looking for something for his son. But the number of drilling's will affect cost too.

Agree. As of that minute, I would pay no more and ask no more than $50, into my hands for that ball.

I would add the ball is used once it has holes in it and or touches the lanes! I've seen balls that had no holes in it that someone wanted to test and it wasn't drilled yet....

+1. If it has low games, you might call it that and ask for some premium, but once punched up it is IMHO "used" and much less worth than in virgin/OOB condition.

I might would say half of what I paid for it once it is drilled, but I would be flexible.
