Donate Your “Retired†Bowling Equipment to America’s Hospitalized Military Veterans
September 10, 2004
Are you looking for an outlet to get rid of bowling balls, shoes or accessories you are no longer using?
Your “retired†equipment might find new – and greatly appreciated -- life if you donate it to the bowling facility at one of America’s Veterans Administration Medical Centers.
The nation’s network of VA bowling facilities (detailed below) welcomes contributions of used bowling equipment. Most of the equipment currently available for use by the veterans is badly worn with damaged gripping holes. To make arrangements to drop off equipment, call the contact person listed.
Bowling balls of all weights are welcome. Because many veterans are unable to handle 15- or 16-pound balls, lighter weights are especially helpful. “Performance†is not an issue; older urethane or plastic equipment will actually work better than newer reactive balls because lane maintenance isn’t a priority at these facilities. Lanes can go weeks without being dressed.
Balls should be drilled for adult grips. Precisely-fitted finger/thumb holes is not an issue, but plugged and undrilled balls aren’t much help because most of the facilities don’t have access to ball drilling equipment. Nor do they have the budgets to get equipment drilled.
In addition to bowling balls, used bowling shoes, wrist supports and other items that might be helpful to novice bowlers also can be donated. Get in touch with the contact person at one of the centers listed below to make arrangements for dropping off donated equipment:
