Vacu Grips
« on: February 28, 2010, 08:44:26 AM »
I have switched to Vacu Grips for about 6 months now.  I am feeling a little soreness in my forearm on the inside near my elbow.. I was wondering if anyone else have had this issue with Vacu Grips.  They grips are pretty tight, but the ball comes off my hand real well...

Just curious if anyone else have had this problem...

Thanks for the reply... I would guess that my grips maybe be too small as my span is already a relaxed span.  I did change both finger pitches to zero.. I may go up one size in grips..

Did you mean 0 reverse/forward on your fingers? If so, that could be a problem. I have drilled literally thousands of balls for bowlers, and only a handful have needed 0 reverse. Quite the contrary, most need between 1/4 and I have had some with no flexibility that needed 7/8 reverse. I doubt even this would cause your elbow pain, but you should have your grip checked by another driller and get another opinion. I can't say for sure without seeing your hand, but I seriously doubt that you should have 0 finger pitch. Wrong finger pitch and too long of a span are the most common problems I see. The two combined can cause pain!

Okay, I will try a size bigger in the grips. They are pretty snug.
Its weird as the soreness doesnt really bother me when I bowl, just after I get done bowling and into the next day.

I used to have 1/4 under in middle and 1/8 away in my ring.. Mo Pinel span from where I was on his staff.  I felt like I was locked in the ball so I went to zero in both fingers, I like how it comes off of my hand.  But I don't want to damage my arm in the process...

I've been using Vacu-Grip insert's for the last year and 3 month's with absolutely no problem's. The feel has been superb. I have not had any kind of pain using them either, Actually my finger's are thanking me!

As for the 1 guy saying he has to change grip's after every 15-21 game's due to stretching, I completely disagree with this. My insert's have never stretched out in the last year and 3 month's. I have gone as long as 6 month's with a pair of insert's before they finally wear out to the point I can feel it.

I just ordered 1 half size bigger for each finger grip.  Hope this helps.

You could also grind out the back side with a Dremel tool.  I have one that is speed adjustable and just run it on slightly slower speed and it won't melt the grips, grinds them off, nice and smooth.

Thanks guys for the help..  I went up an 1/2 size in both fingers and my pain in my arm is going away.  I put my hand in a ball that I didn't change grips in and wow did those fell tight.  Sometimes you just don't realize things until try something different.

Its great that the Vacu-grips come in half sizes.  I've been using them for years.  What I've found out through the years is that both my speed and my rev rate increased with Vacu-grips and thats what I was told about Vacu-grips.  If this is true for you also, maybe its a matter of your arm getting use to putting more revs ini the ball and it will take time to build up those muscles.

To go on and make this post too long:

I was practicing at The Grove in San Diego (now closed, The Grove, not San Diego)and Ernie Schigel (sp?) came up to me with my pro shop guy and said to give him one of my bowling balls they wanted me to try out some new inserts and the test was free.  They came out a few minutes later with the ball and the Vacu-grips and I put my hand in the ball and said, I'll never get out of this.  So they convinced me to try.  I wsa really shocked I got out of the ball at all but it actually did increase my rev rate and my ball speed.  I can't go back to regular grips now or no grips.  My Vacu-grips last a little more then 20 games but they do wear out considerable faster then other grips.  I just buy a bag of both size grips and change them out when needed.  Its much cheaper then having the pro shop change them out.

I mainly switched to vacu-grips for comfort and feel.. I was trying to develop a softer release, and these grips allow me to do so. Plus my fingers have a tendency to go up a down so the grips allow the extra room.

I also think it would be very hard to go back to regular grips...
