call me a dreamer
« on: July 07, 2006, 05:21:19 AM »
it's summer, and we all know what that means for a bowling center.  dismal open play fed only by dollar a game specials and much smaller league turn outs than over the fall thru spring season.  As much as I hate to admit it, my life is VERY boring over the summer.  I'm 17 and work at my local center, which means i have no school and about two to three work days a week.  outside of that the only thing i do to fill time when i'm not bowling my two youth leagues is to practice alone as often as i can.  I've gone through the cycles long enough and i'm ready to finally get off my a** and actually do something with my spare time.

Now for a little background on my local center.  It is a newly remodeled fourty lane center.  My fellow employees are all great people and are like a second family to me.  we are an independent center so we try to rely more on customer service than our big name brand.  Our summer leagues are dismal in comparison to our fall leagues as we only run four leagues over the summer and are closed sunday and monday.  The management in our center seems to gear themselves more towards the open bowler for money and puts the emphasis of a bowling league on the backburner.  Now granted i'm not the management of my center, and i don't know the true inner workings of the financial scene.  I still can't seem to realize how open play is more important than the emphasis on the upkeep and formation of leagues.

This is where i come into play.  I figure if our center wants to progress and step forward we must be proactive and reach out to our customers and that is where i come into play.  I was thinking of making coaching available publicly to anyone for FREE.  The way i see it i could set up a weekly set date to meet together with the bowlers who want to either learn some basics or improve certain aspects of their game, all the bowlers would have to do is pay normal open play rates and shoe rentals if necessary.  I would simply clock in and get paid my normal hourly rate for coaching these people and in return our center could gain the satisfaction in knowing that my efforts may bring a small number of new bowlers into bowling leagues that they wouldn't have previously.  Some people say i fall far and few between.  I just tell them i want to help the center any way i can and that i would enjoy the opportunity to coach willing people.  Is this too much to ask?

I'd be there...
I just found out a local house is going to start doing this....makes the 3.00 per game a little easier to swallow if there is some coaching involved...

Good Idea and keep us posted

Good and noble idea, but don't be surprised if takers are few and far between. You might actually get more students if you charge a nominal fee, like $5/hour, and then give them free rental shoes.

i know certain people do it this way, but i feel more comfortable in promoting the fact that the coaching itself is free of charge.  maybe i can convince management to stock up on name brand shoes from a large distributor like a proshop would and offer the bowler to buy real shoes as an option

Just curious, do you have any coaching certification or any prior experience?  Questions are related to JDT's comment.

I tend to agree with JDT unless you have a good reputation as a knowledgable bowler or have taken the time to go through any of the coaching certification programs.  But on the other hand if there are no reputable coaches in the area and you are not charging anything, it might work.

It can't hurt to give it a try.

jdt, i totally understand what you're saying and i don't question the fact that people will be a little hesitant at a 17 yr old.

thongprincess, i am already planning to receive a bronze level coaching certification which is a joke to begin with. (i.e. the guy with a 120 average who knows very little about the game can receive one for sitting in a room for six hours)

donny, the lane surfaces have not been touched and they're just as easy as they've ever been

It may be a joke, as you put it, but it sounds better to say "I'm a bronze level coach" than "I'm a 17 year old, 200+ ave bowler."

Personally, anything that brings bowlers in and may get them into a league or two is worth trying.
