Wood Lanes
« on: March 15, 2009, 03:41:36 PM »
Alright well my state tourney is coming up and the house it's at has wood lanes and i have never bowled there before. My question is, how much difference should i see from the synthetics i normally bowl on? The 2 balls i use are the original cell and the storm virtual gravity. Are these balls going to be way to strong on wood?

i bowl in a wood house and a synthetic house
the wood house the backends seem WAY sharper than the synthetic house wood house i usually throw dull equipment to even out the reaction and at the synthetic house i throw shiny to create the angle needed to carry.

but then again it REALLY depends on what shots out there b/c ive bowled on synthetics with no oil where the backends were flying and wood lanes that were flooded so there was nothing.

Addik - maple and pine... maple heads and pine backends...  in the distant past wood lanes were all maple

They are softer than synthetics, so expect the ball to start reading earlier on the lane. For that reason I usually find that pearl reactives work best for me. Good luck in the tournament.

The oil on wood lanes dry up quicker, so you can use duller equipment to start but always go to a pearl or shiny solid after you see the ball hit flat or hook too much.  Overall transitions happen quicker on wood lanes and if the back ends are clean, wood will hook more than synthetics -- all other things being equal, of course. Keep an open mind about it and you will do fine. Good luck!

My expereience is that you will not see that same type of transition on wood as you will on synthetic.  Oil lasts longer on synthetics and gets pushed around more, so you're much more likely to have to move in to chase the oil or to have some carry down to deal with.  I've found that equipment changes work better on wood for me than chasing the oil (i.e. shifting to a less aggressive coverstock on the same line).

I bowl at Colonial Lanes in Orlando Florida which are the only wood lanes in Central Florida to my knowledge.  Whenever I bowl tourneys elsewhere my sanded stuff stays in bag usually because of sharper entry angle needed

The wood lanes will have more friction.  Therefore you will want balls with less surface.

I regularly bowl on wood lanes, and have occasionally bowled on synthetics.  Ball response on either depends on the quantity of oil and the pattern.  The synthetics I've bowled on are dryer than our THS on wood, so the ball breaks more.  Can't really say I've seen other differences.  --  JohnP

You have gotten some good responses above.

1: Use Dull equipment.

2: Expect the oil to break down faster, with less carry down.

3: Be ready to move inside to chase the oil, or move outside and play the twig with more speed, less hand. If you can do both, you will find that one shot will carry, the other will not, once the the track burns.

4:  If you have an old favorite benchmark/control type ball, for me, the original inferno, gold rhino pro and mean machine, take them, even if you have to leave some of big hooking new stuff at home. Old balls seem to match up well with the old wood for me.
