Versa max or Jet Black Taboo?????
« on: April 18, 2013, 12:52:31 PM »
I would really like a piece that gives me a good length through the fronts and very strong motion at the spot but cannot decide between the versa max and jet black taboo. everything wants to hook off my hand and I really don't have enough energy stored when the ball exits the pattern. I want something for medium to medium heavy patterns. I'm open to other suggestions as well. any input would be greatly appreciated

The Jet Black Taboo will give you tons of both length and backend. For the conditions you've listed, I don't think you can go wrong with the Jet Black.
The Versa Max is a good piece, but as far as length and backend are concerned, the Jet Black will be better.

Factory finish on the Jet Black make it go very long before it hooks up and flips at the end. I've seen it in action and it doesn't just flip and quit, it drives through the deck really well.

These balls are EXTREMELY similar, so it's really hard to offer a definitive opinion, but yes, the Taboo will go slightly longer and be slightly more angular, though the Versa Max seems to have a more continuous move through the pins.
What would you be if you were attached to another object by an inclined plane, wrapped helically around an axis?

so with drilling the ball motion could be identical? I have a good deal on the versa max and would prefer to drill that if possible. but I also threw my friends taboo and really liked it. so I wouldn't mind spending the money...

They are very similar, with the Versa Max a little longer, and the Jet Black a little stronger on the back.

The Versa Max is still one of my favorite balls that I've drilled in the past year. It's more of a medium dry ball for me, but I throw the ball hard.

Why does the ball hook off your hand?  No oil, playing in friction, no loft?  Revs dominant?

Maybe not identical just because of the cover differences, but with drilling AND a cover adjustment, they would be really close.

Left handed player 450 revs, 5 degrees of axis tilt, 19mph off hand 17mph at the deck. 35 degrees of axis rotation. my low tilt makes everything stand up early for me and lay off on the back. thats why I desire higher end pieces that provide length with strong movement at the exit point of the pattern. even on longer patterns these balls that are designed for this are better for me. give or take a few surface tweaks

Based on what you claim, 100% jet black.  I see the same thing with my game, alot of the time I need umph off the spot....most of the time I can stick with high end asymmetrical offerings....I see the versamax as a benchmark/control peice.  The taboo jet black is a skid flip, watch it jump off the spot type ball...the two are not close at all.

I think both would work. If drilled identical I see the taboo being stronger down lane. Both should have almost identical looks. Or use them as a one two combo

5 degrees tilt, Low tilt, oh my.

PS I remember Mo Pinel had several grip adjustments for that.
