Hey everyone, I just got back from my PA State Junior tournament from this past weekend. One thing i'd like to say is that... What an experience!

Now, on to my subject about these lanes here. The shot was a "38 or 39 foot THS" (I forget what length it was). Also, the lanes were AMF synthetic. For the sake of God, I could NOT keep the ball right. I was using my Orbit Extreme, and Oracle Vision. (pic + layout in profile).. Any line I threw, the ball would NOT push down the lane. Even when I played in the oil (well, if it was there), the ball would still not hold and I had to keep my speed as high as I could possibly go. I have never played on a house shot like this. We were the first squad, bowling on freshly oiled lanes, (I even watched them strip and oil them) but they sure didn't play like a fresh shot would! Anything thrown outside 12-15 was just hooking out the house. It was disgusting, to say the least. :/

Any comments on this? Should I have brought a pearl ball to get some good length down the lane? Maybe i've never bowled on a house shot before? Haha. I know my home center lays out a somewhat modified house shot, but it's NEVER ever like this. What am I missing here? Am I not missing anything, and just realizing how the true THS reacts?

On AMF synthetics I am forced to play 3-4 arrow, they are a softer surface and tend too hook alot if broken in. Sam's Town here in Vegas has these lanes, these things usually fly but I have heard they have made it tougher lately with more oil.

Balls that have built in length with good pop on the backend are usually the correct choice.

htownstaff, I bowled at Sim's Bowling Lanes for team event, and for doubles, I bowled at Baden Bowl.

My house gets like that during the week, but never on fresh oil lol.

The best line is to stand at like 20 and swing it with plastic lmao.

What to learn: always expect the unexpected when you play foreign lanes, and even in well-known houses the oil machine can have a problem, or the lane crew has been "creative".

My personal lesson - bag some ball for high friction situations. While it might look dumb to haul around 4+ balls, I found myself in this hyper-hooking situation more than once and was happy to have a Slate Blue Gargoyle or Pure Hammer as a fall-back option when battling anything stronger against the lane would not allow a decent and controlled game.

An entry level ball or an old-school urethane piece is NEVER a bad choice in any serious bowler's bag

Just more sensible than having only strong high end balls at hand. If you do not have enough oil for them, lights go out, quickly...

Same goes for super-oily lanes, but I think this is less or a problem than total lack of oil and having only (too) strong equipment at hand.
