Can "concentration" be practiced?
« on: June 09, 2008, 10:47:46 AM »
I personally believe it can. Practicing next to a kid's birthday party helps my concentration.
Just being able to practice without distraction of teammates, opposing team, and even competition helps.
Thoughts?

Agreed about the birthday party idea. Sometimes that's the only silver lining about that situation.

Some ideas: Put a pre-shot routine down on paper next to the ball return, refusing to throw a ball until you've followed it exactly. This helps you avoid the rapid-fire sessions where you seem to be in a race against yourself.

Playing a different part of the lane than you're comfortable with is another idea.

Lastly, try "visualizing" yourself bowling an hour or so before you leave for the center. From set up, to arm swing, to delivery and targeting. If you can find 10 quiet minutes this can be a great way to calm yourself down so when you get to the lanes you're worried about one less thing because you're just following script. Sometimes you can't predict the exact line you will play, but you'd be surprised how close you can get.

I practice during cosmic bowling and birthday parties.  I have also done the lane resurface thing too.  Right now I practice while answering the front counter phone.  My teach my highschool students a form of combat bowling where anything is legal as long as it is safe.  Calling names out and making noises works.  The hardest part is bowling while laughing.

The main goal this summer is to rise my backswing and hit repeatedly a single dot at the arrows. My coach give me the advice to put a piece of tape 3 feet past the arrows and roll the ball over it with a loose armswing. I never was so focused like in the last 4 training sessions.

I would definitely say concentration can indeed be concentrated.  I figure if you're going to practice for a while and work on something specific, that right there is both practice on your physical and mental game.  And bowling with all sorts of distractions and side events is quite helpful too.  I find it so easy to block out the rest of the league now.

This is what I try to do. I try to visualize everything that Ive had happen or that may happen. If you are prepared for something to happen, you wont be caught a couple shots behind because you are upset or otherwise.
