Vet needs help with ten pin spare
« on: March 20, 2009, 08:24:18 AM »
Take a look at this thread over at bowlingtracker.com

http://bowlingtracker.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2848&posted=1#post2848

Man is a certified coach and due to combat injuries from Iraq in his wrist is having trouble picking a the ten pin.

Needs to know if you can use negative side weight to make a plastic ball backup?
or as he put
"Currently the ball is drilled finger-tip with no side weight. Is there a way to make a plastic ball a backup ball and put enough revs to negate the backup ball while still making the ball a finger-tip ball?"

all other spare shooting options don't work to make the ball go straight.
can't roll end over end, can't throw harder, no lighter ball etc.

I don't have an account, the simple answer is to keeping moving his feet left(right hander).

Thumb at the target and come right up the back of the ball.

Well the first thing would be for him to post a video so we can see what is happening,

If that's not possible, than perhaps he should get himself a Blue Dot, or one of the clear plastic balls.

For us to sit here and just guess at what will or won't work is a pointless.

Not trying to be rude or anything, I too am a disabled Vet, and I have had to learn a totally different style

I had a friend who had a hard time with 10 pins so he got an aggressive hooking ball and drilled it for a lefty  and was able to pick the up that way

You might have him talk to his ball driller in regards to changing the pitches in his spare ball to facilitate him coming out of the ball 'more up the back' with less side rotation.  A good percentage of the guys on tour have slightly different specs on their spare ball compared to their strike ball allow them to come out of it different.

Judging by his last post he only wants to hear from pro shop operator's, about using negative side weight. too make a plastic ball backup.

Recap-
He wants to bowl like normal without massive changes to his game.
He has a plastic ball driled with no side weight.

He can't see a coach because, Hes a certified coach himself.
He got one pro shops opinion. But he wants others (I'm guessing he didn't hear what he wanted)

Because he wears a Orthopedic wristband
He can't relax his wrist,
He can't dump his wrist to the right. (So he can't do the point thumb tip)
He can't spread his index and pinky fingers wide and come straight up the back of the ball so it rolls end over end.
He can't throw harder.
He can't do a suitcase grip.
He didn't say why he can't use a lighter ball.

He might try leaving his ring finger out to take some revs off.

He wants to use negative side weight to make the ball back up, then put alot of rev's on it to over come that when needed.
But if his wrist is in such bad shape, I wonder how he's going to rev it up?

IMO, you CAN make a plastic ball back up with negative sideweight, but it would take so much that the ball would not be legal.  I have used an old 12 lb urethane ball as a "trial ball" for several ladies considering going to a fingertip grip, so the ball now has 3 or 4 sets of holes to the negative side of the last grip I drilled in it.  The trial was to see if they could be comfortable throwing a properly fit fingertip grip and the ball obviously was not used in competition.  The last lady I did that for normally throws a small hook with her conventional ball, but the trial ball had a definite backup.  When we drilled the same grip in her Emerald Vibe it had a definite hook.  I haven't weighed it, but I would guess it has about 8 oz negative side weight.

For your friend, I would suggest sanding a plastic ball to 4000 Abralon, then polishing with Bean's Secret Sauce - burn it in good.  When he lines up for the 10 pin have him align his body so his swing to the target is in the same plane as for his strike ball and see what happens. It may take a while for him to get comfortable with his shoulders being open to the foul line.  --  JohnP

i wonder how "bad" his wrist is considering that he can rev it up as much as he thinks he can
