Women's World Championship - Spinners Delight
« on: August 10, 2005, 03:35:23 PM »
After the doubles, trios, and team events, helicopter bowlers have won the trios and team events.  Still to be decided is single, all events and masters.  The top 16 all events finisher will qualify for the masters.  Spinners hold 6 of the top 16 all events positions after 18 games.  The leader is a spinner averaging 215.

Each event is 6 games on a long and short oil pattern.

Lynda Barnes 4th
Stefanie Nations 12th
Shannon Pluhowsky 19th
Diandra Asbaty 30th

(Spinners basicly throw 11 lb balls down the middle)

I hear that the lane topography in this center is really tough/bad. Add short and long oil patterns using about the same volume of oil. I was told that the heads dry up really quick on the long pattern. This certainly affects the conventional players negatively but not the spinners. All in all, these conditions suit the helicopter players well.

The standings with the Master left to bowl are:

Doubles - Germany - hook - one left handed, one right handed
Trios - Taipei - spinner - all right handed
Team - Taipei - spinner - all right handed
Singles - Malaysia - hook - right handed
All Events - Taipei - spinner - right handed

Top 16 All Events qualify for Masters.  1st spinner/right, 2nd hook/right (Lynda Barnes), 3rd hook/left, 4th hook/left.  Of top 16:  7 right/hook, 6 right/spinner, 3 left/hook.

PS. Don't think it is all lane condition that put the spinners on top.  The All Events winner has won the World Youth Masters twice.  She also bowled the US Open against the women pros.  She made top 24 in the Open.  I think she finished 12th.

When the lanes are tough, frequently a large percentage of the lefties are near the top.  When you toss in spinners, the competition is between the lefties and the spinners. A righty may get in, but it is tougher.

Agreed - no matter what style you have to be an excellent bowler to be on the top in the world championships. Maybe the outcome in these championships will influence the Americans and the Europeans to explore the spinner style more. Seems to make sense, at least in women bowling where ball weight can be more of an issue.

I don't think the spinner style will take in the US and Europe.  Frequently the lanes are high scoring and you want create area and apply power to the pins to increase scoring.  Spinner don't create area and apply power to the pins.

You are right about the spinner style being very effective for the women who can not handle the ball weight.  In this tournament, there is at least one spinner that is under 5 foot tall and several that are lucky to weight 100 lbs.  However, they still averaged over 200 for the tournament.  How often do you see a very petite lady hook the ball and average 190?  Almost never.

The best spinner story-factual.  1995 Men's World Championship.  After 16 games of match play, the Masters leader was a spinner.  He lead a field that included Chris Barnes, Mika Koivuniemi, Patrick Healey Jr, Tomas Leandersson, Tore Torgersen, and Bill Rowe.  He eventually won the gold medal in a stepladder final.  This guy was lucky to be 5 feet tall and definitely weighed less than 100.

I have been following this closley as my fiancee is out there bowling for Wales, it's her first ever international competition and she has finished 185th, not bad for someone new to this level of bowling in her first year as an international. She has said the lanes are hard, anything going near 1st arrow stays out there as the oil is to 60', they also change lanes after every game so if they can't find a line in 1 or 2 frames scores suffer.Apparentley a lot of bowlers are making the pocket and not getting any carry. Still it's been a great experience for her and will help improve her bowling.

"Frequently the lanes are high scoring and you want create area and apply power to the pins to increase scoring."

No argument there. But aren't female bowlers generally a little less adapt at creating area than male bowlers? Couldn't that be another argument for taking a closer look at the spinner style?

I believe this was Yang Chenmin of Thailand. He beat my compatriot Raymond Jansson in the final game.

For ladies, the spinner style is a option.  The tough part is to get a knowledgeable instructor.  The leaders in this area are in Taiwan.

Yes, that was CM Yang.  He was from Taiwan.  He beat Jansson.

Final results. Womens Masters 1st China right/spinner, 2nd right/spinner, 3rd right/hook (Lynda Barnes).  The third place in match play defeated the second place match play finisher.  The leader (all events winner) lost in the step ladder finals to the 3rd place finisher in match play.

Some details:  The All Events winner/Masters 2nd bowled 42 games.  In the 24 games of All Events she average 214.  In the 18 games of masters she average 216.  Composite for 42 games was 215 average and all of it spinning an 11 lb ball.

Impressive! Remember that's a 215 average on really difficult conditions. I read somewhere that the lane topography in Aalborg actually was worse than in the center in Kuala Lumpur which was deemed unfit for the 2003 championships.

I'm adding the Guangdong province in China to my bowling places I' like to see list!
