Need advice on my slump!
« on: February 09, 2005, 01:22:00 PM »
Just want to get some opinions on how you guys get through your slumps. I have been in a slump now for the last maybe 8 weeks. Before this slump, my average was at 197 with around 40 some games. Now my average has fallen to 193. I need to get this taken care of before it gets worse. I shot a whopping 498 tonight and was ready to just throw all my equipment in the dumpster on my way out! My question is, Should I bowl my practice and sweat it out...or should I lay off of it all together for 2 or 3 weeks. What do you find works best. I have been trying to sweat it out by practicing more, but all I end up doing is hurting my confidence and mental game more. What do I do??

Just stop. BEST advice I can give to anyone in a slump is just stop for a few weeks. It works wonders. You come back REALLY wanting to bowl, and you kind of "re-adjust" everything back to your old self. I have to do this from time to time.

JUST GO BACK TO THE BASICS. THE VERY BASICS OF BOWLING. DO NOT TRY AND OVER THINK EVERYTHING. AND MOST OF ALL, SLOW DOWN YOUR BALL. WHEN SLUMPS BEGIN WE ALL BEAR DOWN A LITTLE, HENCE SPEEDING UP OUR BALL AND MAKING THE SITUATION WORSE. RELAX, BASICS, SLOW THE BALL DOWN!

I have been trying to play with my ball speeds. I have also been moving all around on the approach trying to find a spot. A couple people told me I was just trying too hard and focusing too much. Is that possible...focusing too much?

I'm sure some will disagree with me...BUT...sounds like you are trying to hard. RELAX !!! I'm not in your league, but bowling is suppost to be fun...like golf...horse shoes..anything...fun. To me, if a person trys to hard, thinks to much you can 'overload' and then sh*t hits the fan. Do what comes natural, enjoy, just bowl. Sounds like you have the basics down, just trying to make to many changes all at the same time and 'overloading' what you can do. Keep your basic grip, swing all that, but don't think to much. Relax, enjoy, when I have a crappy game, that's what I do, not that I'm all that good, but it brings me back to what I can do and takes all the 'bad shots' out of my game.

my 2 cents are up

stopping never helps me.  In fact, last Thursday I bowled for the first time in a week and a half, I had the flu.  I shot 603.  On a 233 average (yes I know the house is easy).  When I take time off it hurts my timing, I'm inconsistent and just can't get into the flow.  Going back to basics like someone suggested is a good place to start.  And also, just stop trying to hard.  I know it's sounds stupid but don't put so much pressure on yourself and try and have a good time.  If you're relaxed you will bowl better.

I feel your pain, I myself have been in an ugly slump.  Inconsistency.  Throwing a good score, and then following it up with a terrible score and not understanding why.  Its been timing, hand issue, accuracy, just about everything.  As soon as I stumbled into a solution to 1 problem, several more popped up.

Last night, I pulled out an old Burgundy Hammer ball and hit the lanes.  I picked an old urethane ball, so that I could focus on accuracy as well as hand.  Even if I threw an accurate ball, if I didn't come out of the ball right or tried to get too cute with my hand, the ball wouldn't hit.  I made sure to use it on both spares and strikes.  I figure if I threw the ball properly, I could control where I wanted it to go without it taking off like resin can.  Anyways, after 6 games my timing and accuracy came back, and I was able to find some funny things I was doing with my hand.  (Coming around the side, letting it go soft, etc.)

If you have an old ball that really makes you earn your strikes, I would go with it for some practice.  While resin is nice that it can cover small mistakes, I think I got too dependant on it and then lost my game.  All I know is I never felt better after a set than I did last night, where I could really see what I was doing wrong, and not getting away with anything.  Good luck bud, and if things keep getting worse, take BK's advice and just take a break for awhile.  Then come back, and pick one thing and work on it, scores be damned.  The rest should fall into place soon enough.

D <~~~~ Used to be terrible wiffing 10 pins.  Now through much practice, can wiff any single pin spare at any time.

I feel you, brother.  After a stellar 495 (average 209-215 in 3 separate leagues, 3 separate houses) last Wednesday night, I followed it up with a 235-520.  Yay!!!!

However the silver lining is............I found out when I start slumping, I start pressing and squeezing the ball.  I also run to the line and severely increase ball speed.  Not to mention blaming everything from a tracked-out ball to too much heat in the bowling center to the da%n mixed league that screws up the oil before us.  Bowling is a game of preconceived notions and self-fulfilling prophecies.  If we say we are going to bowl horribly, we program our minds to do just that, and bowl horribly just like our minds told us to.

It seems impossible, but keep positive thoughts, slow your feet and ball, focus doubly hard on your target, don't look up until your ball is more than halfway down the lane and stop standing up at the line!!!!!!!

Remember, you are not as good as your best night nor are you as bad as your worst night!!!!!!

Thanks for all the advice and different views. I'm gonna give it another try next week in league and just not think about any of it. If that doesn't help, I'm just gonna lay out for a few weeks. I feel like I'm letting my team down with this slump. Since i've been in it, we have fallen from 1st place out of 22 teams..now to 5th place. They too have had some bad nights, but I have been bowling sorry for 8 weeks now. Thanks again for the advice.
