For me there are no pros to vinyl thumb incerts they are thin and tacky and I just could not get agood feel with them the only pro I can see in them is you do not have to have a hole drilled in them its allready there

The only pros are that they are the same every time.  If you like them, then great, they are gonna be the same shape and size in every ball.  If you have "chubby" hands, the tapered thumb inserts ARE pretty handy, they fit some people real well.

The cons are mainly for the oval inserts, they just don't fit many people very well.  You have to work them out side to side and/or use lots of tape.  If I'm going to have to do alot of custom work, I would rather do it on the drill press where I can repeat it pretty accurately.

Inserts are probably better for people that don't have a driller that can mill holes, I guess they are better than a plain round hole.

Urethane holes drilled in the ball are the preferred type for most pros!

Urethane is great for those with long thumbs, wet thumbs or slow thumbs out of the ball.

It is fast and easy to get out of the ball with urethane.

Vinyl on the other hand is tackier as said above and is for those with dry thumbs.  Shorter thumbs and fast thumbs.

As a person who usually has no problems getting out of the ball...I love vinyl.

But each person is different.

If you are out too quick...it could be you don't have a long enough flat spot in your swing...OR timing....or a urethane slug and you need vinyl.

PS the dividing line between long and short thumbs is around 2 1/4 inches from tip of thumb to large knuckle.

Personally, I dislike vinyl inserts. I tried friend's ball with a vinyl slug, and I found it very slippery, soft and touchy when you sweat. Also, not easy to adjust becuase of the gooey consitency of the stuff. Yuck!
Not my thing, and 2 plasyers I know who used them got rid of them and moved to urethane slugs. They are much harder, lasting longer, and are easy to fine-tune with sand paper, sanding pads or a bevel knife.
