Thank God it's over with this pattern on the PBAX. Only few I saw could master this pattern. I really don't understand it. It's somewhat like Chameleon I guess due to the fact it seems like your always having to make moves but this pattern feels like a reverse block. Impossible to play outside and probable to play outside and in if you can play straight up the back of the ball but inside there seems to be a shot as long as you don't get it out past 7-8 depending on your style and how far inside you are standing. I found speed is mandatory as slower speed gives you brooklyns or splits. I failed on this pattern last summer and always thought Chameleon is harder but it really isn't to me. On paper looking at it looks like cake but in my opinion it's a bitch. I bowled pretty good on the heavier shots like the Shark and Scorpion. Viper is like Cheetah but way trickier with no room and really not much of any particular place to play. I'm dumbfounded by it.

Depends on the house, their machine...  Two years ago at a different house is was tough.  You could play outside for a little while, but it got brutal quick  Averaged 183 for the summer.  At my current house, it played very close to Cheetah.  Averaged 208 during the summer and 203 for the winter.  All of the patterns can play different from house to house, but I've seen the most variation with Viper.

Topography of the lanes plays a big factor but it is still the most confusing of all the PBA patterns. You can play multiple angles but early on you are better off going as straight as possible until some of the oil has worn away.

The only advice I can give you is that you usually need to get the ball traveling parallel to the boards through the front part of the lane until the pattern breaks down.This can be on the gutter to inside of the track, but covering boards side to side is not usually wise. It can be anything from relatively easy to very difficult depending on the usual factors of lane surface, pattern volume and type of oil, etc. Sometimes urethane works well for me.

This is why I solely throw urethane on this pattern and play angle off the corner. no need to worry about breakpoints and moving

I'm in the process of trying to find out where I fit in the bowling world. I do not know my tech specs of my game, but it's all a learning process.

I would tend to agree that the lanes play a big part on how Viper plays. I have only bowled on it a few times when bowling regionals when I lived in TX. I forgot who said it, but I agree that you really need to be going up the boards at the front of the pattern. You want a ball that will get down the lanes a little to make sure that you can do this. I had my most success on this pattern throwing a particle pearl. I think something like that or a stronger hybrid cover would be good choice on this pattern. It will get through the fronts clean, but still have some bite to get through the midlane. I don't think something skip/flip would work well, as it would be hard to control the breakpoint with that.

 

I have found a PBAX league here that I will be joining in the fall, so I might be able to provide more insight then, or I can cry along side you, we will see, lol.

Lane surface seemed to really dictate where to play on this pattern. I hit this one in an old wood house in a regional and everyone that scored started up the lane with speed. Then about midway thru the 4th or 5th game, everyone jumped left a couple of zones and was throwing there shined pin up stuff swinging the ball thru the fronts around 20 or so out to about 8. I hit this another time on HPL's and couldn't get a ball to break outside of 6. I had to make sure I was left of 20 with weaker stuff so it wouldn't burn up too quick in the pocket or turn sideways in the first 40 feet. Had the same luck on Pro Anvillane only had to keep it online higher in the track with a smooth reacting ball with about 2000 on it to get it to hit.
 
Some of my best scores on this pattern was with pin under layouts with smooth surfaces. I also tried to use a flatter end-over-end release when playing up the lane and a clean release with little grab if lane surface forced me left.
