I would guess the original poster didn't get the responses he wanted. Most of the responses were around that the answer was the bowler playing the lanes wrong....and most don't want to hear that. They want the answer to be switch to this ball, with this drill, and your problem is solved. While there are occassions where that truly is the answer, most of the time it's something the bowler is doing incorrectly or made a wrong choice.

Biggest problem with bowling is the bowler sometimes.

Biggest problem with bowling is the bowler sometimes.

ITS THE BALL, THE LANES, THE APPROACH, THE CONDITION....ITS NEVER THE BOWLER! ;)

I asked a question and then I had to leave for bowling so I never did see if there was a reply to the question.

I found my original post:

A lot of wisdom in the preceding posts.

I have a question about the theorical situation.  If you change something in the ball (say RG), won't that change the amount of miss you would have to the right or even the line you would have to play itself?

in my experience, house shots blend bowling ball reactions so much it would have to be at least a moderate change of the ball. for example changing from 4000 to 3000 wont help much but from 4000 to 1000 youll see a difference.

I would have to disagree, slightly. On most THS patterns, at least all the ones I have bolwed on, there really isn't enough volume to throw something at 1000 grit. So going from 4000 to 1000 would be a really bad idea, unless it is a very very weak covered ball. Even then, I think it would be too much. I do agree you might not see much difference going from 4000 grit to 3000 grit, but even a small difference can have a huge impact on scores. I have found, that I don't want to make any radical changes bowling on THS, it cause more trouble then it's worth. Minor moves, minor changes seem to work better, for the most part.

Actually I don't think house shots blend out the ball reaction so much as they give you options on how to play the lane with almost any layout and surface.  Definition of house shot is puddle in the middle and friction outside.  Want to throw something out into the dry and watch it come back.  Go shiny.  want to hug the oil line a bit more, go with something solid.

Biggest reason house shots score so high isn't margin of error, but rather every style can find a way to get lined up to best exploit friction for maximum carry.  Also the reason that almost any type of ball can be effective on a house shot.   Things change as balls blow up pattern and force people in, but on fresh their are lots of options.
