How many steps in your approach?
« on: March 06, 2011, 01:20:59 AM »
I've been bowling for three years now and have progressed nicely each year in league. Everytime I throw I am worried about line and speed.....but this past monday I forgot how to walk....anyone ever have this?? I started my approach and half way I just blanked and didn't know what to do. It only lasted a frame and then I practiced on the side but has anyone else ever had this??? I am a righty and start with my left foot. What foot does everyone start on and how many steps?

Have bowled with 5 steps since I started bowling... have tried 4, 6 and 7 before just to see how it was and could never develop a feel for it.

5 steps unless I have to get infront of the ball return, then its 3.

I know your confusing experience - had this once or twice when I started working on my timing, or simply started thinking consciously what I was doing at all...

Anyway, I use a five setp approach, even though my initial step is very small. I found that I need this "trigger" to get me moving and starting the pushaway in sync; with just four steps I always had timing difficulties and tendency to have fast feet. The initial trigger steps lets me move more smoothly, and in fact I start very slowly, just to "explode" with my second-to-last step, when I generate leverage for the forward swing and slide phase.

Just do not overthink things, let the pendulum and gravity rule, and a good knee bend is also helpful.

thanks for all the input. I have a five step approach with my initial step being very small, much like a "trigger" step that some of you have talked about. had league tonight and it went well but it was sure on my mind. it's like golf....the mental game is what it's all about. once you have the skills theres only one thing stopping u
