Working on Accuracy and playing different lines
« on: October 30, 2012, 11:00:15 AM »
This is two part question.

What things can a bowler do to improve their accuracy?

Also playing different lines and angles, is there some sort of method out there that can help someone. (Is there any good books or manuals). Example: You have bowler that plays down and in. Bowler comes to you and asks they want to learn how to play more inside. Obvioulsy this style is very different.

Part 1. Use the weakest ball you have. Plastic included. You're going to know if you missed then.

Part 2. As far as playing different parts of the lane, it's all about perception. What I do, is draw a line from my shoulder thru the arrows area of the lane to the breakpoint I want, and then try to let my arm follow it. Now, if you want to move in, usually a hand position change is all that's needed. If you're trying to go left to right, and you're usually a down and in player, try turning your wrist towards yourself slightly, and see the effect it has on ball roll. When I have to really open up a lane, I will do that just to create some more tilt.

If you have someone at the bowling center that will help out with oiling a pair with a pattern that you  need to play that line. Also bowling on sport patterns as often as you can. I am lucky in that where I bowl they will do a pair for you as long as its loaded into the lane machine. Also when practicing play the wrong line and use the balls that make play away from the shot. It's not about scoring but practicing hitting what your looking at!

First, I am not a bowling coach so I would suggest the bowler find a good coach to work on their issues.

Accuracy:

Have the bowler work on their approach/delivery consistancy.  Obviously, if a bowler drifts two boards right on one shot and then drifts one board left on the next, they will not have great success.

Have the bowler work on being square to their target.  Feet, hips, shoulders should all align.  For most bowlers, holding the ball more to the side of their body will be a help.  Some bowlers will hold the ball in the center of their body causing the armswing to be off alignment.

Remove muscle from arm.  Pulling the ball will not help.

Head should be level - no bouncing up and down.  Will help with keeping the eyes on the target which is always important in hitting a target.

Ask the bowler if they hit their target.  Surprising how many bowlers will not know.  If they do not know, then they probably lifted their eyes from the target before the ball got there.

Balance at the line after ball delivery.  Having a stable platform releasing the ball improves accuracy.  This may be another good reason to buy a good pair of bowling shoes.
