Lucky streak?
« on: January 29, 2018, 04:10:30 PM »
After 11 weeks in our 20 team handicap league (4 person mixed), one team has never lost even 1 game.  That's 32 games won and 1 game tied.  Their team handicap puts them almost in the middle of the league, 11 teams are better and 8 teams are worse.  Their top 2 bowlers are in the low 160s.  They are definitely beating the odds and the handicap system.....

Luck.

Our league has 20 teams in it. We are in 16th place. The team in 1st place has close to the same team average as us.

For whatever reason, many of the people we have bowled have had “career nights” against us, shooting their best of the season against us.

When we bowled them, I shot exactly 700. Their anchor bowler, averaging 198, shot 749.

Highest set he’s shot all year. We didn’t have a chance.

They’ve bowled good at the right time.

We’ve bowled bad at the wrong time.

Is it odd that it happens this way? Yes, but it does sometimes. Fate can be a very odd thing sometimes.

In a league I used to play my team was the high avg team by at least 100 total pins and we always finished in the middle of the pack.  Getting beat by 160ish average bowlers that had career nights was a regular thing.  And those same 160ish average bowlers  would say they never really tried unless they were bowling our team.

It wasn't hard for them to figure out that if they applied themselves picking up that extra spare or two to score a high 190 was all it takes to get the win.  And every time I would watch it happen by the 7th frame I'm saying to myself, if I don't punch out were not gonna catch em.

I agree with Rocky.  I run into this both on league and tournaments.  In league, the bowlers know that I am a "good" bowler, so they try harder, pick up a couple more spares and hit the head pin more often.  We are near the bottom of the league, because the teams we bowl, always seem to bowl over their average.  Tournaments are the worst.  I don't get into handicap brackets.  I can't compete with 150 average bowlers, that come into the tournament and pick up most of their spares and throw a double or two.  I bowl the tournaments to compete against my self and a few other scratch bowlers.

Don't overlook the fact sometimes it's the way your team breaks down a pair that helps the other team bowl better. I've seen it many many times.

I bowl in a mixed league. If I want the other guy on my team to have a chance to light it up, all I have to do is pull out my IQ Tour and play deep. I've watched him throw at least one game over 240 for four weeks straight when I did it. At least another 220 as well.  He's 175 avg give or take a couple. I've got a bad slide knee. I can't take the pain it causes me to do it or I would. I bowl under average when I move out there. There's a net gain but not enough for what I have to endure. I know, I'm a bad teammate.
