VT_turkeys post got me thinkin

Why do we aim for the 'pocket'? Is it because some top notch bowler one day came up with this impact point where he got a few X's? I think it's this persons fault why everyone is so frustrated in this sport with lack of carry...

Lets make a list of the pins ive left from pocket. 7, 8, 9,10, 4, 5, 6. So pretty much anything on the back 2 rows can stand on any pocket shot.

Lets make a list of the pins ive left from brooklyn. 10, 9, 6.

Now lets look at this in a half hearted mathamatical way.I find 10 pins from brooky are about as common as an 8 pin from pocket. So the 10 pin from brooky and the 8 pin from pocket cancel each other out. 9 Pins from brooky are the 10 pin equivilent of pocket (even though in my opinion the 9's from brooky happen less often, but just for arguments sake). And the 6 pins are the exact replica of the 4 pin from pocket.

This still leaves the 7, 8, 9 and 6 pin from pocket unaccounted for. Now i know someone is going to come on here just to be a smart a$s and say... "oh oh but once i saw a social bowler bowling with a 6 pound ball leave a 7 pin, etc etc etc." But im talkin about the regular league bowler and upwards here.

How many of you have left a 7-10 from pocket? everyone? How many of you have left one going brooky??? Not me. 8-10? Yep ive left a few... none from brooky though.

It seems as though the numbers stack up for brooky. If you miss left... and wash out... your not going to leave a nasty split. If you miss right... your still going to catch a huge peice of the head pin... gives you a CHANCE at a lucky strike.. so WHY exactly do we go pocket???

good luck and high scoring

We aim at the "pocket" because it is proven to be the best way possible to score.

Everyone remembers the stone 8's, ringin 10's but they forget all the half pocket strikes, messengers, and general good carry.

Crossing leaves a pretty small pocket for consistent carry and much greater possibility of low count first balls. And you forget the 5-10 splits.

I'll take about any bet you want a game on a typical house shot with you trying to throw cross overs and me going for the pocket.

If you could turn back time, let me start bowling again, never aiming at pocket, and aim at nothing else but brooky.. then you would be on... The few times that i do cross... i get strikes... i know i trip out a hell of alot more 6 pins from high brooky then i do 4 pins from high pocket...

I feel that if i kept a tally of the carry % from pocket compared to brooky.. brooky would be infront.. maybe thats just me. The 'problem' pin for brooky is the 9 pin... for pocket its the 10 pin... if a title was on the line.. i sure as heck know which one ide prefer to be shooting at aswell...

good luck and high scoring
