Title: Waking up with numb bowling fingers?
Post by: LaneHammer20 on January 24, 2009, 09:18:16 AM
Two days this week I have woke up and my bowling fingers, middle, ring, and thumb have been numb. More the thumb than my fingers, but they stay that was for a couple hours it seems before eventualy going away.

Anybody else ever have this happen. I have been bowlng alot more this year. Normally 3-4 leagues a week.

I hope it ain't carpel tunnel.

I had that problem years ago because of a pinched nerve.

Yeah, sounds like a pinched nerve to me. You might want to try and elbow and/or wrist brace while bowling and see if that will get rid of the trouble. Beyond that, the doctor is your best bet. They will most likely get you into some physical therapy that will teach you some strengthening options. With an increase in your bowling you are most likely over fatiguing your muscles and they and your tendons are swelling. Just a thought.

It could be carpal tunnel syndrome, get to the doctor and find out for sure.  --  JohnP

it hasn't happened the last 2 mornings, so i am unsure what it is.

Hope it isn'ts carpal tunnel, that would put a damper on my bowling.

Go see a doctor and find out what it is for sure.  With something like digits going numb, I wouldn't wait.  The earlier doctors figure out what something is, the better chance they have of fixing it.

It could be any number of things from carpal tunnel to a pinched nerve or something else.  Go see a doctor.

Do you have any shoulder problems at all?  I've got a condition in my non throwing arm where after I carry anything heavy my hand tingles and can go numb because the bursa sac in my shoulder is loose.

It usually doesn't last until the next day, though..

Since it's not happening everyday more than likely you are rolling over on your wrist while it's bent during sleep cutting off blood flow circulation to the fingers putting them to "sleep" so to speak. A good test is to get a cheap wrist brace of some sort to sleep in for a week or two. If problem still persist then see a doctor because your looking at Carpel or a pinched nerve as others have suggested.

The nerves that run through your carpal tunnel in the wrist, provide feeling to your thumb, index, middle and inside of your ring finger.  Waking up with numb fingers, is one of the warning signs for Carpal Tunnel syndrome.  It doesn't mean that you have a severe case or anything, just that the nerves in your wrist have become inflamed or aggravated.  I have known several people, including myself, who have dealt with this.  If it continues to happen, I would recommend that you go to the pharmacy and buy a wrist brace that keeps your from bending your wrist, and sleep with it on.  That and some alleve, and you should feel better in a week.  If that doesn't help, I would agree with everyone else that you should have it checked with a doctor.
